Tonight when we were bringing in the horses, I decided to put the baby's halter on her. I've been lazy about that and she's already 2 months old. YIKES! How did she get there already? And she's getting BIG! So DH and I go into the stall with her and Boo and I tell him, "Just get her cornered up agin a wall so I can come up and pet on her a little bit and sneak this halter on.". So he walks up to her and thinks he's going to hold her by wrapping his arms around her and just HOLD ON. Yeeeeeahhhhhh, NO. She got away from him about 3 times in quick succession, way too big for that manhandling stuff to work. So I told him to trade jobs with me and I took the halter and started cornering her. LOL! Little stinker! She is quicker than greased lightning and smart and flexible. She's almost too tall to still be able to slide under momma, but she can still do it if she pretends she's a slinky. I finally got her up in a corner and disabled her with a butt scritch. Then, once I got just the right scritchy spot and rythm going, I started singing to her and working my way up towards her head. If my neighbors ever heard me, they'd probably have me committed.

To the tune of "Camp Granada"

You're my silly, little filly.
Yes my thilly, wittle milly.
Tilly milly, filly willy.

Repeat, any kind of nonsense rhyming silly words but keep the tune and rythm and scritching going, all while giggling at the filly's parrot lip and neck and nose stretched up and pointed skyward. After awhile I quietly slid the halter around and dropped it over her nose, fastened it and kept scritching while I told how good she was and then left it on while I put everyone else away for the night. When I came back all I had to do was give her bum a good scritch and undo the halter, pet her on her face a little and tell her what a good girl she is. And of course, sing her a good night song. Yeeesh, is there anything I won't do for these silly creatures? NOPE!

Lol. I think I was pretty lucky with my colt. He was so good about being haltered and always so friendly, I never had any issues with the halter until he turned into a yearling. Now he wants the halter in his mouth. Doesn't matter how insistent you are about putting it on correctly. Now I just put the halter on like it's a bridle an let it sit over his tongue... I suppose I won't have any trouble when it's time to introduce the bit.

Baby horses are really fun. I'm already trying to figure out how many extra hours I need to work this year to afford another one. Not that I need another one, but it would be fun!

My vet told me he has free frozen semen from an Arabian stallion named Brillante B. I tried googling and have not been able to find anything on that particular stallion. Any suggestions for looking him up?

The only thing I could recommend to you would be to buy a day use permit from AHA so you could look him up on Data Source. Arabian Horse Association Data Source It looks like you can buy it for $10 for a 1 day use, non-member. It would tell you his breeder, his current owner, and his bloodlines. His name doesn't ring any bells with me.

Pictures please!!?!? That sounds so amazing and funny about the filly. I made the terrible mistake of not training Nevada well enough to lead when she was small and now I am reaping what I sowed........ I have to lead and lead and lead! her all the time becuase she is really stubborn at times. But she was my first foal to train 😄 😁😁

LOL!!!! I am waaaay out of practice for THAT! So I'll say NO! I'll have hubby try for some pix this weekend while we're working with her. I just don't have enough hands to keep up the scritchin', doing up the halter, going back to 2 handed scritchin' and remembering to keep singing and telling her she's a good girl. I hate to think what would happen to my phone.

We were just talking about how easy she is to work with right now. She totally doesn't want to be manhandled or forced but the second you go to the light touch and the persuasive way rather than 'because I said so', she really meets you half way or more than half way to you. Obviously, she will have her moments, hours, days because she IS a baby and she's going to hit the point where she just says, "Not NO but Hayell NO" and we'll have to work through it. But of all the foals we've worked with or bred recently, she's the very easiest so far. It's really been quite lovely so far. Makes me a little worried for the first walleyed fit she's going to throw. We'll cross that bridge when we get there though.

Went into the stall again tonight and she did a little bit of the duck and weave but really, nothing that even remotely counted. Even let me put the halter on from the wrong side, momma Boo was being passive agressive and kept swinging her big butt in the way so I couldn't come up her left side, so I said, "OK, this'll just make you balanced from either side." and put the halter on and reached over her neck and did up the crown piece. No fuss, no muss, no bother at all. WOW! I'll take 5 more just like her.

Today we did the "Troll Toll" at the gate concept. They had to come in for a while during a thunder and lightning squall, so when I went to turn them back out, I decided that I wanted some filly lovin' before I let them go. Filly said, "NO, I want to go play!" and scootched under Boo's neck and tried to avoid the scritching. So I did the old, I can stand here longer than you can, and blocked the gate. Boo huffed and rolled her eyes but didn't interfere and pretty soon here comes baby and let me scritch her chin and cheek but "That's ALL!". So I said, "Nope, Toll costs more than that, gotta let me have a good scritch all over.". Waited a little longer and here she came again and let me have a good scritch in all her favorit spots. Got the full parrot lip, clacky teeth, nose in the air, rolly eyes and then I said, "OK, there you go! Go out and play now." and she was all, "HAY NOW! I'M NOT DONE!" And I said, "But I am. ;)" and walked out. Leave 'em wanting more. She doesn't know it's all part of my evil plot!
