Monument Valley trail ride

I finally was able to fulfill one of my bucket list items... to horseback ride in Monument Valley. I took my daughter on the trip (left behind wife and son, they're not horsey people). We did a couple of horseback tours. What an awe-inspiring place and exhilarating ride. Up and down hills, ridges, arroyos. Because we were with a non-beginner rider group, the guides took us through more challenging trails. Very cool experience. I'd like to go back and do it again someday.

Looks like fun. I'm looking to set something up for my son and I for next year. Maybe I'll look closer at this.

Gorgeous country!

@Vee2 Did you have to get permission from the Navajo beforehand to go for the ride?

I watched a couple of John Wayne movies too before and after the trip. Fort Apache and She Wore a Yellow Ribbon. So cool to see and know the places in the scenes. The original Goulding's house and trading post which is now a very nice museum, John Wayne's cabin in She Wore a Yellow Ribbon as Capt. Brittles. They even showed Gooseneck state park in Utah in Fort Apache. We swung by to check it out since it was only about half hour away. Even the drive to Monument Valley from Flagstaff, AZ was memorable. The vistas and scenery are beautiful.

The ride inside the park was done by the Sacred Monument Tours. One of the Navajo tour companies that does horseback trail rides. We also had another ride outside of the park (but still within the MV area) through another horse riding tour outfit called D/D MTA Horse Tours. We had a Navajo guide on both tours. Although I think as long as you're outside the official park, you're free to trail ride.

Awesome and a great Bucket List item! MV is gorgeous, historic and I would love to do that one day as well. So glad you got to experience that & with your daughter! I bet she loved it too. Great pix, thanks so much for sharing.

I took a horse tour in Yellowstone. It was so long ago, I barely remember it, but I do remember the beauty and how wonderful it was. I would also like to do the Grand Canyon Mule ride.

She enjoyed it a lot. She said it was a very enriching trip. Maybe I should add horse trail riding at Little Big Horn next! :)

Were you able to use your own horses and tack or were you on a dude string? I love Monument Valley and actually, all of that area up there.

We flew in from the east coast (flew into Flagstaff then drove 3 hours to MV). All we brought were our boots and riding clothes. Horses and tack were provided by the horse tour operators. The horses know their jobs and are very sure footed.

I forgot to mention we ran into wild ponies. I was too slow to take pictures of them.

Those horses look amazing for what I'm used to seeing for rental horses. That really speaks well of the tour operator. What a great trip you had! Lifetime memories for sure.

I put together a quick video of our ride. Unfortunately it's 95% footage from our second ride that was outside of the tribal park, and not by the famous Mittens. In the first ride inside the park, I had accidentally changed the mode on my Gopro camera from video to photo, so I only had footage from the very beginning when we were just starting out and haven't gone down to the valley yet. The rest of the footage was from the second day's ride. Still a beautiful place no matter where.

A couple more pics from inside the tribal park. This one is from John Ford point. It's not from a trail ride... there's a Navajo with a horse that you could get on and take a picture with for a small tip.

There was a scene in The Searchers where John Wayne was on it spying on the indian encampment.
