I've only had my new boy for a few weeks now, but my quarter horse saddle doesn't come anywhere near fitting him. A trainer told me he needs close to a 9" gullet. I've looked online and have found 9" gullet saddles, but I would like to get more suggestions before I run right out and get one. I have a treeless I can try but haven't yet. Any suggestions on saddles for him would be helpful. I'm looking for a western saddle for trail riding.

First off beautiful horse :D are you planning to show at all with this horse? or will this always be leisure? treeless saddles are not allowed in the show ring. What I would recommend to get some great input is to go take a look at a forum Im going to send you a link to, that has a lot of information that will help you.

Contact these people, they will help with the correct gullet size. Usually an 8" with wider draft bars will work

Hi, I always use treeless on Arthur, but that's because his size fluctuates so much be amuse he eats so much ahaha, although what I would say is, a) dont mount from the ground with it mine slips every time I try without fail, and b) although most say to use a dressage girth, don't. When ever I have used one the saddles slipped and I've come off haha the elastic lets it slip because it stretches :)

I went through 5 saddles trying to fit my beach ball shaped Gypsy Vanner.

Let me save you some time and an incredible amount of money.

Regular saddles will not fit. Full quarter horse trees will not fit. Wide saddles will not fit. Treeless saddles will fit but will roll if you Gypsy has no withers (as most do)...so you will end up sideways on your horse in about 5 minutes unless you gall them with the cinch.

My Gypsy has a 9 3/4" gullet. Most horses have a 6 3/4-7" gullet. So you can see the problem.

After 5 saddles, I finally sent his tracings to a master saddle fitter....who laughed when she saw them. She said she had over 500 saddles in stock and not one would fit him. She recommended two things...
A dressage saddle. Or a custom made saddle. Period. Don't bother wasting your time with anything else is what she told me. And she was 100% right.

I ended up with a used Barnsby wide dressage saddle which is the most balanced saddle I have ever sat in. A master saddle fitter came out and fit it to his shoulders. He goes like a dream in it. He was miserable in anything else.

I also just got custom western saddle from Crestridge Saddlery. Beautifully made, not super expensive and made to his tracings and pictures. They are very honest and wonderful to deal with. I am very happy with it and he is also. I think it was $1000 including shipping. Give them a call and they can help you.

Hope this helps!
