I recently bought a paint gelding and my 17 year old mare is on a terror biting, kicking and driving the gelding away form the herd. When I separate them both go ballistic until back together so the biting and kicking can start again. What the heck is going on?

maybe its a wierd mix of separation anxiety and your mare feeling the need to assert dominance?

I guess they are working out their pecking order… how about a fence so they can see each other but can’t hurt themselves?

Tried that. The gelding ran through five strands of steel fence.
