The roofers are about finished with the roof and have left probably a few thousand nails laying on the ground. They have a hand pushed giant magnet, but I really doubt it will find them all. I am not thrilled with the job they did... They were supposed to put tarps down to catch shingles, but their tarps were all ripped up so the nails fell right out onto the ground.

I did a 20 ft area with their magnet after they left today, and found about 400 nails! Enough to fill half a cool whip bowl.

They haven't been fully paid yet, so I am planning on telling them they have to do a really good job getting the nails up!

I'm still thinking a metal detector might be a good idea, as some are going to be missed no matter what. I know nothing about metal detectors...

Anyone know where you could rent one? I could also buy a used on one ebay, but don't know what would be a good brand...

They make magnets, large ones that you can roll across the ground to pick up the metal. That might be worth it more than a detector.

I bought my son a metal dector for Christmas a few years ago and only paid $40 for it and it worked really good! Renting one may cost more than that.

Best bet is a magnet, metal detectors work if you don't mind digging around but for a few hundred nails it might be more work. Sounds like you were on the right track using their magnet.

Just drive a truck or car over your lawn. Your tires will find every remaining nail ;-)
