My wife and I are total equine newbies, and we're trying to make sense of all the tack my father-in-law left behind when he passed recently. Thanks in advance for your help.

What kind of saddle is this?

A variation of a "plantation" saddle.

I can only guess at the age. Can you tell what the "tree" is made from?

Thanks a million for the reply. It's wooden as far as I can tell. At least the horizontal portion under the seat is.

Age is about 20 years, perhaps a tad more. That we can pin down. My father-in-law bought it for his second wife and they divorced about 18 years ago, married exactly 5 years.

Again, thanks a lot. It really helps.

Sure looks older than 20 years, sure is a cool looking saddle, never seen one like that.
