Hey, I am trying to find an affordable saddle for a 17 hh Thoroughbred, who has very high withers. He needs a narrow tree size, that allows for good wither clearance, but I am having trouble finding a saddle that comes in a narrow tree. I was looking at used saddles, but I haven't had much luck. So I have started to look at synthetics such as Wintecs, but I have also found saddles made by a brand called 'Supra'. Has anyone had experience with that brand? If you have any suggestions of inexpensive leather and/or synthetic saddles I should take a look at please post! Thanks!

A/P or CC? My Collegiate A/P have LOTS of withers clearance (from the way it's designed). Pessoa CC provides pretty decent clearance too.

I just typed this same stuff below on another thread, but it's the same question, so here's my input.

The new Bates Elevation Next Generation has a nice narrow twist and fits my high withered TB very nicely. The adjustable gullets allow for changing as your horse's shape changes. It's around $1700 on sale, $2200 otherwise.

A much cheaper, but not nearly as nice good fit for high withers is the Thorowgood T4. It's a synthetic saddle. It's nice and sticky so it's great for when you're out trail riding and your horse has a "moment". You can find it in the Dover Saddlery Closeout section pretty much any time for $399. I use the snot out of mine. It's held up really well for the two years I've had it.

Very few horses truly need a Narrow tree, especially a horse that tall. If he's that hard to fit, I would invest in a saddle fitter to come help you. They often have different saddles they can bring to try on him, and you can always ask people at your barn if you can try their saddles.
