This is my first post to the forum. Hopefully someone can give me some advice. I got a TB mare in Jan from a breeder. He told me there was a slight chance that she was in foal...well, she is! I'm excited, but also a bit scared....we've never had a foal before. Anyway, the mare has a wound on her hock. It actually looks like she filleted the top layer of skin off. She has no lameness and it doesn't seem to hurt her at all. There is a bit of swelling down her cannon, but not much. Since she is about to foal, we haven't been giving her any bute, but I was wondering if after the foal is born, we should give her some for the swelling. I've searched the net, but can't find much about nursing mares and bute. Does anyone have any advice? Thanks!
