I am a HUGE scissor fan. Vegas tries to get away from the clippers, and I dont want to catch a piece of skin or anything!

I use scissors to cut the bridal path, feathering, mane, tail, ears, whiskers. You name it! The Scissors have been there!

I always use scissors on my horse's tail but I do pull his mane. He is half Arab so doesn't have much of a tail anyway, no one will notice that I use scissors on it to neaten it up :P

har-har, Im in high school, and one day last year I cut my LONG hair (halfway down my back) short as my ear lobes with paper scissors in my room. lmfao IN HIGH SCHOOL. My mom had to hide the scissors. lmfao. And the only reason i cut it was it was static-ie that day. lmfao.

I also cut like, six inches off my geldings tail one day, lmfao, my trainer was like *facepalm*. lol.

I have like shoulder length hair that can't decide if it wants to be curly, or straight, so it does this akward.... mix of it? I dunno, sometimes it looks like I have a perm, others its just kinda... there....

Hahaha... Don't worry I'm not allowed permanent markers, sharp objects, shiny things.... Its almost as bad as some of the paste eating stories around here...

lol, ok, so, over in another board I told a story about how my horse's tail was so thick and heavy that she couldn't properly lift it to go potty and thus got dirty ALL the time!

Yes yes, I know that cleaning it would have been a better option, however, I couldn't clean it EVERY day.

So, what do I do? I take some scissors to her that's what! lol

I trimmed up along her dock and shaped it around her big 'ol rear so that it 'layered' nicely, as well as up underneath a bit where it got the dirtiest.

While doing this another boarder who owns western pleasure show horses comes up and gives me a look far dirtier than my horse's tail. She looks at me and asks "What on EARTH are you doing?!" and I state the obvious "Cutting her tail to keep it clean" lol. I then get a small lecture that I should just wash it regularly and or 'pull' it.

Now, I know what pulling is, but I don't really want to spend an hour yanking at the hairs on my horses butt! lol

I don't show or compete or anything. I just go, love on my girl and ride in a small riding area or out in a pasture. I don't even go on trail rides with other people lol.

Same day, same grannie. When done with my horse's tail, I move to her ears, yes, with the scissors! lol. So, Caddy is standing like the lovely lady she is and I'm just snipping away when the grannie returns. Not so politely she asks me why I don't just take some clippers to her ears if I was so worried about it. I just smile and shrug and explain that I don't own a pair of clippers. She tells me that there are some 'communal' clippers up in some cabinet. I didn't really feel like getting into. (Not really hot on using other people's things, communal or otherwise hehe)

So yeah, that's my funny little story of being so very 'un-horsey' that I take scissors to my horse lol.

Really...what's the big deal with pulling and clipping if it works for the horse and the rider?

Sometimes you just can't tell what some folks will get off on!

Cool other scissor dorks glad I am not the only one to use them. Neighbor had a COW when she saw me clip Rascals ear hair with scissors. OMG YOU'LL POKE HIS EYE OUT!!! Last time I looked his eyes are a bit lower LOL

I use clippers and sissors! I really don't understand why someone would "pull" hair out when you can just cut it. It can't be comfortable for the horse even if it doesn't hurt as much as pulling my own hair. I use sissors on the mane but cut up into the mane not across. That way it does look natural and not "cut".

I don't see an issue with using scissors - I had to do a full mane roach with scissors because I didn't have power in the barn. When I got to the show, I borrowed a pair and cleaned it up, but if I hadn't been showing, I wouldn't have bothered - it looked fine. For the face though, you can use a cheapo Bic razor for all the little whiskers. It's neater and safer, particularly if you've got a head tosser.

I use scissors all of the time to trim up my horse. I don't have electricity at my barn, so I do have a pair of the hand held/hand operated clippers, but they are really tiring to your hand, so I tend to stick with the scissors for most stuff.

I don't own clippers, they are expensive in the store. If I show my horses, it's only open, free fair shows and I do it just for the fun. I always use scissors, they are easy, quick, and my horse doesn't care about the sound they make.

(My baby boy is an appy though, so I hardly have to worry about that stuff anyway as he doesn't have much hair!)

haha. Well it's true..I like to use scissors. Not all the time but I do prefer to use them. Clippers are so much maintenance and I don't even show my horses.

A year ago we took my mare to a training barn. Super fancy, bratty spoiled teen, kinda barn. We did a month of training and then entered a fun show on the last weekend. The day before the show my friend stayed late to help me bathe/groom Candy. A different girl walked by and quote "OMG what the he**?" "She has whiskers!!!" ....I was like..."Yeah..and??"

Long story short, she went and grabbed the clippers plugged them into the wall and began trimming.... POOR Candy, she couldn't handle them --She started freaking out!! I just sat there :shock:... They all were like "She'll get used to it eventually"

I believe horses should have whiskers, especially if they live outside..It's their natural detection system!!

Candy also has a really sensitive stomach so she has occasional diarrhea. I snip a few inches of the bottom of her tail and some random bad pathes. I also do the bridle path and occasionally some manes.

I have given a few jacked up hair cuts here and there but my horses still love me!!

I have never used actual scissors but I used to use a pair of old sheep shears to trim a bridle path. I don't clip anything else on my horses and I don't use them anymore since I got a pair of clippers but this is what I used to use.

I HATE clippers! They just seem annoying to me, with that buzzing sound and vibration. I don't even trim bridle paths, but I do even up the manes with scissors every so often.

Oh, and about the kids cutting their hair before picture day - I did this the summer before eighth grade. I had pretty, thick, wavy hair halfway down my back and I just decided I needed a haircut and snipped it off to my shoulders. I did, however, cut some chunks off that were six-eight inches long and so I had to let a barber fix it, and he had to layer it a lot.

My clippers won't work on my horses legs, so I use scissors as an alternative. I only really use clippers on my pony's whiskers.
