Oldenburg Cross on ?? for an eventing prospect, sport horse

205 Views 2 Replies 3 Participants Last post by  QtrBel
I am looking for options to cross on my registered Oldenburg (Hanoverian/Arab) mare for a sport horse cross for an eventing prospect. It is with all intention to keep the foal as long it is a filly, that is what I am set up for stabling wise. On the flip side if it is a colt I would like to have the ability to be able to market him for a serious show home.

Mare is conformationally correct, 15.3 hh, does have the talent for jumpers. She does not currently have a show record due to my fault and life being in the way. She is busier minded due to a bad start to life.

What studs are recommended? AI obviously with quality swimmers

I'd suggest finding something on the ground and with some training or using what you plan to spend on breeding to train your mare to get her to where she needs to be for you to start riding her at the level or in the discipline you are interested in. The above site has horses they've bred for sale as well.

And yes, they do have a nice list of stallions. Several though are frozen only. How old is the mare? Is she maiden? If not maiden when was she last bred? Do you know anything about those foals and their sires to determine what she puts on the ground? Her age and repro fitness would determine fresh or frozen along with a comprehensive repro exam.

With no show record for your mare to prove talent even breeding to a quality stallion in the discipline you are interested in does not guarantee you finding a show home or recouping your expenses for a foal you are not planning on keeping. Why not geld a colt and keep? Having a filly does not guarantee that she'll be suitable nor does it guarantee life won't continue to get in way.

I'm not understanding busier minded due to a bad start in life? I wouldn't breed a mare with a bad attitude if that is what you are meaning by busy mind and a busy mind/curious nature(?) doesn't suggest a bad start. If you purchased a horse out of a bad situation and were not able to confidently bring her along are you going to be able to bring a foal along and provide the training necessary to have her at the level you are looking for?

Have you raised foals prior to this or brought along a youngster from start to finish? In the discipline you are looking at?
