You have to have the right lighting and shadows. It's just a silhouette. :]
It's less of a how and more of a right place right time thing.

To get the effect you want you have to have the light source behind the subject (what you are taking a picture of). This is done a lot with sunsets. The sun is setting and you have your subject in front of it and you get this effect. The specific picture you are talking about looks as though it was taken inside a dark barn, with the light source being the outside behind them.

You could paint it darker (using the paint brush tool), or you could use HDR (high dynamic range – there are tutorials on how to do it located on the web).

Honestly, i think that the silhouette in your photo works great just the way it is! The small amount of detail in it makes it more interesting.
