Back story on this mare: My daughter purchased her in March 2022 from the Stroud Oklahoma kill pen. Daughter was able to trace her via a photo to a sale barn in Northern TX. Plans were to put a refresher on her and sell her and make some money for school. Daughter and husband loved riding her and decided to keep her. I started having suspicions she was bred about 8 weeks ago when her appetite really changed and the shape of her body changed. Local vet has never palpated a mare so we purchased a P-Test (which sat because I scared her each time I tried to capture urine in the pasture) While on a ride on Sunday daughter carried a container and jumped off her horse when Piper peed on the trail. P-Test was done as soon as we got back to the trailer and came back POSITIVE. So now we have a mare that is more than 6 months pregnant (we know this because she has never been exposed to a stallion here and we have had her 6 months)
The foal is large enough that you can see it kicking and moving in her flank area.
So I am going to start a foal watch post even though we could be watching for many months. We don't know what she may have been bred to but have seen a few other Blk/Wht gaited horses on some sale barn sites near where the barn she was sold at was, so our guess is another Blk/Wht gaited horse.

@Dreamcatcher Arabians I used the P-Tests, on the accidental pregnancy I told you about. I had mixed results. Lol. The first two said pregnant and the last open. I believe it’s because the first two were contaminated, since I took them off the ground.

My youngest thinks the third is the wrong one. I guess we’ll see by next month. The mare is fat, which is odd for a two-year-old in work, but I’m thinking it’s just her build. I guess I’ll find out. I do believe the final P-test as it was the only non contaminated one…

@Knave we were going to try to get urine off of the ground but my daughter is a Vet school student and talked to a Prof and they said NO. The powder reacts to some pregnancy hormone in the urine so the sample must be clean. I wish I could have video'd my daughter diving off of her horse to catch Piper's urine as we were on a trail ride. My husband who was riding Piper started yelling my daughters name as soon as Piper slowed down and started to squat. My daughter got her container there and captured a LOT of urine and was so proud that she did not even get her hands wet! The vial turned a deep blue immediately and got a little greener the longer it sat. We are pretty confident it is accurate as the foal moving is very obvious at this point.
I would do the P test again as it was inexpensive (about $15 for those wondering) and the results are easy to read.

I tried to video the foal moving this morning. It really moves when Piper is eating - the movement is right at the flank area and really obvious.

Does anyone want to do a poll on foaling date/color?

How exciting! My guess is that it will come before spring if you can clearly see it kicking. It would be cool if you can get video of it.

If the foal is very obviously moving around, then I would expect you have about 2 months, maybe 3 months to go. The larger the foal gets, the less they tend to move around, as there's less room for them to move. Watch her udders and for body shape changes. Also get some seramunne on hand, and administer that to the foal when it is born. It can help prevent a failure of passive transfer. It is a vaccine that is administered orally and can save you on big vet bills.

Nothing much to report. Some days Piper looks really pregnant and other days not too much. Her energy level has changed. I catch her napping more often and she has become quite lovey and wants to be brushed and have her tummy rubbed. Her tears are slightly bigger but seem to be getting dirtier or itchy I am cleaning them about once a week when I see her rubbing her tail. She loves to have them cleaned! She doesn’t canter in the field any longer Either. She will pace or gait a bit but the all out canter is gone. It’s gotten cooler here so I catch her napping in the sun quite a bit

How far along is she supposed to be?

We don't know anything about her before she came to us in late March. My daughter purchased her from Stroud Kill Pen in Mid March and before that had traced her to an auction in Paris TX that was held the first week of March. We know she has never been exposed to a stud here and she has been here 6 1/2 months. The P Test taken in August showed 6 months to full term so anyone's guess is as good as mine.

Personally I am thinking late October to early November as a lot of southern breeders breed in the fall. Unfotunately, a late fall baby is tough in NW IL and means a mare will nurse through the coldest part of the winter.
