Hey guys!

So I'm a very avid programmer - have been since I started in 2012. I can write proficiently in Java, Javascript, C++, Objective C and Python, and work competently in HTML, CSS and BASIC (all the oldschool languages).
First off - are there any other programmers out there? I'd love to talk to any of you, not too many programmers I've met are interested in horses!

Secondly, and onto bigger and better things - I'm working on an application that's based around horses. With all my experience writing apps for people, I thought I might as well write an app based around something I love, which happens to be horses.

It works as a diary (you can track worming dates, vaccinations, feed schedule, work schedule, temperature, heart rate etc etc) and of course it has a pretty UI, but it seems pretty plain at the moment. There are already some pretty cool apps that do the same thing, and they've been around for a long time.

The feature on the app I like the most (and the one which took me the longest) is that you can write a diary entry each day (like some of you guys do on here) tracking your horses progress. If there are sentences such as "there was a lot of bucking" or "he doesn't seem to be eating properly", or along those lines, my app will search the web and give you page suggestions which could have solutions to your problems. Depending on what you choose to click every time, the suggestions will change to fit the type of suggestion you usually choose.

Of course, the app is only half done - I've been working on it on and off for about a week, and I've got bits of it everywhere, but I'm keen to hear -

  • Would any of you use this?
  • What else would you want in the app?
  • Does the 'suggestion' part sound stupid, since you can just google it?
  • Anything else you want to say?

It's just the beginnings of something now, so don't feel like you're not allowed to say "I wouldn't use it" - that's really useful to me, as long as you tell me why!

Thanks guys :)

I would definitely use that app! I am a huge organizer (sometimes, in certain areas, haha) and I have actually been hoping something like this would come about!

Definitely would use that app to keep records straight! I can be a mess at organizing so it would be nice to have all the info i need right in my phone. The suggestion thing would be nice but probably not necessary for every entry so maybe just make that an option to use when needed?

Not many programmers are into horses.

I code C/C++ mostly but also proficient with Python, Perl, PHP, and Bash. I recently moved from Silicon Valley to Washington state so I could live my dream of owning enough land to own a horse. I work remotely now and my coworkers constantly ask me about my horse. I'm the only person they know who has a horse.

The other funny thing about California work culture is how casual people dress. To a nice company dinner the other night, my boss wore a beanie and a dirty tshirt. I am by far the best dressed person when I come into the office yet they all think I'm a ******* because I have a horse and ride dirtbikes.

Hi Kate,

I am so glad I found your post. As a horse-loving web developer, I can sympathize with your sentiment that there are few programmers in the horse world! How did you get into programming?

A little bit about myself: I recently took up programming and have since specialized in developing web apps (using HTML/CSS, Javascript, Ruby on Rails, AngularJS) and have dabbled a bit in native app deployment (Ionic Framework). I recently build a native iOS app as a project for a course, but have not done anything with it since.

Your horse diary app is something I hear owners complain about a lot, actually. It would be a great tool to monitor/track habits, as well as find solutions for unusual vices. What platform is it currently built on? Are you planning to monetize the app?

As you mentioned, there are few resources out there for the equestrian world, and many of them are out-dated, not responsive (or just plain ugly)! I'd love to learn more about the ideas you have, and possible share ideas and collaborate on something in the future. Best of luck with your development!

Since I run an online horse game, I actually know quite a few programmers who are also horse people! It's nice being able to connect with some common ground.

How fun. I'd use an app like that.

It'd also be cute to add a section for baby horses.
At 1 month he stood ___ and weighed ____ and here's a pic.
At 3 months he stood ___ and weighed.... like a baby book!

I have an app kinda like that on my phone, that has a basic database of common health issues etc which is something you could do. I think it would also be interesting to have the ability to take and store photographs of wounds, for example.

The suggestion idea sounds pretty good to me. I wonder if you could also have some kind of function where it could match up to older entries, like 'you've mentioned bucking 3 times before in this, this and this entry'. For me, that would help draw a connection between what caused it.

The ability to import data from different file formats would be nice......as well as an export function......say, as a .csv?
