As I have no horse it fits currently, I am going to have to put my beloved Longhorn Barrel into storage. I have a rack, and a cover. How should I go about this to make sure she stays nice?
I have a number of saddles in storage and that is how I do it. Clean, oiled and put on a rack with a light cover over it.The leather needs to breath so putting it in a container or covering it with a non-breathable material is a no-no. That is a good way to induce mold and mildew.
I would thoroughly clean it with saddle soap, being sure to get all sweat off any leather then I would give it a good oiling (or conditioning) and store it in the house or another area that is more humidity controlled then a barn would be. I would also take it out periodically, once per year at least, and clean/condition the leather. It could last and be supple indefinitely that way.
