Yes I have been told the it looks worse than what it is, but I have been putting M.T.G. on it and it doesnt look much better. Our barn wont be done for about two weeks at the most, so for now he has to be out in weather, does anyone have a good product they use for this.

My horse had a HORRIBLE case of rainrot...covered his whole hindend to his withers and it was very painful for him. I washed him with Betadine every couple days and used a 50:50 solution of the brown (must be brown) and baby oil. Let it sit for a couple days wash him again with the betadine and the scabs will come off pain free. Clear Forrests case up within a week and hair starting growing back right away. I have tried many things, but this by far gave me the best results in a short time...here is a picture of his rainrot back....( note he was a rescue case, so he doesn't look like this anymore) But rainrot got him really badly due to poor immune system.

I have also had good luck with mouthwash. You want the clear, unscented and uncolored stuff if you can find it. Soak the affected areas daily or as often as you can. It helps to kill the bacteria and isn't harsh on the skin like soap so it helps keep new infections out as well. Leave it on don't wash it off. Monitor your horse carefully though as sometimes things like this can cause allergies and exacerbate the issue in certain cases. I have never had it happen but I have heard of allergic horses so just keep that in mind.

Tea tree oil. You can find it in most drug stores for about $10. Put it on the scabs, wait about 15 minutes. They'll come off like butter. Apply more after picking them off to help keep it from spreading. It worked far better for me than anything else I tried. I'm still trying to figure out who on this forum suggested it, so I can thank them.

either tea tree as mentioned above or when its dry or you can use the barn for a few hours dilute some hibiscrub in warm water and wash effected area when u come to dry it make sure its bone dry and the scabs should just come off easily then treat with another antiseptic and a barrier.

I thought my horse had rain scald so thais is what I did but just ended up getting him a rain sheet as he turned out 24/7 and end of problem (touch wood)

I use Boo-Boo Dr. with great success. It's from a company called Blue Ridge Distribution. Works great on scratches, rain rot, thrush etc.

Treating rain rot

Well so far I have gotten all the scabs off. I find it just takes time, lots of washing and caring for, and every day thing. Must keep him clean. I am now washing with main and tail medicated shampoo, seems to work good, and spraying him down with main & tail medicated spray that is for rain rot. I also have u stock which someone told me about. After I have used all the Main and tell Med spray I will switch to that.

I think now its just getting the hair to grown back, thank you all for your help.
