So all four of the kids went to the vet today for their annual teeth floating, shots and sheath cleaning for the boys.

Charlie was second and he ended up with a double dose of tranquilizer because he wouldnt settle.

Almost as soon as the tranq kicked in and they started floating his teeth he started sweating.

The weird thing about it is he was only sweating under his throat latch, and his poll. And we're talking soaking wet sweat not just kind of hot.

This was at 945ish and he is STILL sweating two hours later. When I pulled him out of the trailer when we got back he had begun sweating on his shoulders as well.

Hes eating fine, the tranq seems to have worn off and his temp is normal but he was still sweating when we left him.

This is his 3rd time having to be double dosed with tranquilizer but my mother says he did not react this way the previous two times.

The vaccines he was given were. West nile, rhino, potomac, and rabies.

Has anybody else had a horse react this way?

If hes still sweating heavily when we get bqck and if hes at all dehydrated im gonna take him in but just wondering if anybody else has seen this and if I should call my vet?

Excessive sweating is very common after sedation. If all else seems normal I would sponge & scrape the water off.
Ask your vet just to be sure.

Okay thanks! good to know. It was just so strange hes never had this reaction before. He was pretty mopey the rest of the day but hes drinking and eating and he finally stopped sweating so bad.

Ive never had a horse react to tranquilizers like that but now I know haha.

Scotty is a sweater like your guy after the same proceedures. Oh & he's a snorer as well, after his float & landing gear scrubbed up, he leaned on the stocks & had a snorefest while other horses waited out in the parking lot to be seen by the vet. The vet made hubby wake him up and leave, lol. It was a cold day when we went (had snowed a little) but Scotty sweat for a few hours afterwards, lightly, but he still did.
