Our road is pretty far out in the country so there isn't a whole lot of traffic... I was just wondering what side of the road is legal to ride on and how far off the road I have to be???
Thanks
Thanks
In the US, please make sure that you check with your applicable local clerks (town/city/county) and state (Department of Transportation). In NC, state vehicle laws specifically mention that horses are not vehicles. For example, it is not against the law to ride (even on the road) while you are drunk. If you are ON the road, you are considered a vehicle in pretty much any place, UK, US or AU. So you must follow the road rules as if you were a vehicle - and that includes riding on the side that you would drive a car on.
I'd have to ask them to show that ordinance. Far to few law inforcement people know every law and ordinance. I've had them tell me I couldn't do things that I knew I could and called them on it. In one case they wrote up my son for something, only to have it thrown out by the court solicitor before it ever went in front of a judge, because it wasn't illegal. Police can often just believet things that they've been told without actually knowing the law. A lot of times rumors get started about what is legal or not. I'd check the actual law, because in most cases the laws might have conditions for horses and some restrictions, but seldom bans on horses being used purely for transportation through an area used for public transportation.I believe its Municiple. I have never seen it written anywhere, but all the horse people in the area say you cannot, and one says she was told by an officer that she was not permitted to ride alongside the roads.
