I think the horse would be fine without the other. The person maybe just trying to get rid of two horses. Don't rush into something you don't won't. Take your time and look for a horse that meets your needs. Make a list of what you want in a horse and take your time Make sure you are making the right choice and getting a horse that will be right for you and your mom.

IMHO, selling horses as a package deal (with the exception of driven teams that work well together) is more for the seller's peace of mind than the horse's. Horses are not like people. Sure, they bond, but they can bond just as easily to a new companion and they won't pine for weeks or months or years the way a human will do if involuntarily separated from the one that they love. Offer to buy the QH, but if the seller will only sell him if you take the warmblood too, then you can either take her up on it and re-sell the other later or decline her offer and keep looking.

Ready to deal with a screaming, tantrum-throwing, nightmare of a horse? Sure it'll get over being separated in time but can you handle the nightmare it'll be until then?

 

It makes no sense for you to claim your horse is sad and you want to get it a friend and then turn around and tear apart a pair of bonded horses just so your horse has a friend.
I hope you realize how I see that to be twisted...
Animals that see and touch another animal after it's dead sometimes have a better understanding than animals who are just taken apart and never meet again. It's well known in elephants, no idea about horses. But I wouldn't tear a bonded, live pair of horses just so my horse has a new friend.
Plus, your horse may still be grieving in some way and may react violently to a new horse, either so soon after the loss or even months later. Randomly buying a horse is not a good idea.

 

If you decide to go look, pay attention to which horse is the "bonded" one. I have a friend who bought 2 who could not be seperated, and honestly-it is the gelding, not the mare, who throws an absolute fit when he is seperated from her. So much so that my friend always has to have someone to ride with when she wants to ride either ot on the trail. She is a beginner, but frankly, even those of us who help her and are experienced have issues with the aged buddy sour boy. IMO if they are that buddy sour, they will be again. I am so thankful to ave a horse I can leave alone for hours and he is fine. No calling, fussing, etc. Really nice. Something to think about as you look. And yes-please don't rush. In this market it is really easy to find horses-not so easy to get rid of one if you pick the wrong one.

 

Has the seller said she prefers to sell them together or that they must go together? Whether it is "mean" or not is not the issue if the owner is not willing to sell just the one.

 

Don't rush into buying a horse. Make sure you go there, try it out, check it over and be sure its the horse you want. Don't just get one because you want a friend for yours, or there is a package deal. Get the horse you want and can handle.

Yes, the two horses are probably friends but if she's selling them chances are they'll be split anyway. Few people will want a QH and a big warmblood - completely different horses for different people. The horses will move on. They're not like humans. If she refuses to split them up then you can always find another horse. Take your time.
