So, about a mile don the road from my farm, we have made friends with Dotty. She. Is. AWESOME! She has 5 horses, and 5 mini's. She's so down to Earth and such a nice person. Anyways, we were at her place, talking about horses, and seeing people we know. *Well, about 3 miles away, there is a SMALL little place with plasic green wire fence. Its a 3 acre pasture, and was very nice to begin with. Those people started off with a bay, and a paint. Well, everytime we drove by (pasture is right beside the road) - the horses had halters on. This irked me. -- NEXT they had 15+ horses in that pasture!!! The majority was adults, but they had several foals, yearlings, and seniors. Most were (and still are) thin. One was so sinky, you could count the verdibrea! Within 2 weeks the number of horses decreased. All of the current horses are in this pasture, have halters, and are skinny, and probably unhappy. The orginonal paint is still there, a yearling, a grey Arab, a mare and her foal. Every day the numbers change. And on Sundays there are 0 horses. I swear they are dealers, and I don't like it.

Well, Dotty told us two of their horses have DIED on sight!! One was the skinny black, he collasped and died right in the middle of the feild. What did they do? Cover him with a tarp before dragging him away. The seconf horse got caught up in a tree, and the halter strangled it somehow. So there was a dead horse tangled in a tree for a while.

Now I haven't witnessed the deaths but I beleive them. One night my mom and I were driving down the road, and a foal was outside the fence, almost out on the road!! We wet to a house (thinking she was the owner) - which was really a enighbor. She called the true owners, but the foal was already runnin away.

We left.

Anyways - I want to save the poor little foal and yearling from this horrible place, and call the cops!

What should I do? Is there anything I CAN do? Ugh! I hate these people with a firey burning passion, and I want to save their horses from the hell they're in.
Ugh!!!!

Call your local ASPCA or SPCA or animal rescue, animal control, etc.

Do the horses have food and water? (realize this means food period. not food that you would feed to your horses)

Unfortunatly, hear say is not going to work. They are allowed to turn their horses out in halters (there are plenty of people on this forum who do) and you'll have to check your zoning laws, etc to see if they are actually breaking any laws.

Usually the hands of the officers are tied by the law. If you do report, report with facts. Document, and don't get overly emotional about it. There is also nothing illegal about horse traders.

I know, and I'm quite aware of this. Thats why I'm so angry, these people are very uneducated. Very ignorant. Will not listen to a word anyone else has to say.

They have food and water, but no shelter. Or, I think they have water at least.

I don't mind turning out in a halter if your educated, but these people have had two (probably wonderful) horses die in 2 months.

*I also know there is nothing wrong with horse dealers, but most of the time is neglectful. My pony was traded from the time he was born until he was two - and was severly abused. Poor guy.

Educated people or not, horses get tangled up and get into everything. From the sounds of it, there is nothing that an officer could really do. It's enraging when horses are neglected, but the officers are better off taking care of horses that have no food and water and are dying of starvation. Keep your eye on them and if they do something you can actually prosecute, pounce.

Thanks, SD, I'm going to start documenting, and maybe even talk to these people. Hopefully, next Spring, I can rescue a foal from them. By that time I hope one will still be around.

No. They had him covered for a day or two before dragging it away. I forgot to add that.

SD - I wasn't proposing that. I know how people are.

I honestly don't think having a halter on is that big of a deal AT ALL. All of my horses have halters on 24/7. I think it is actually much safer this way because they have gotten out before, and if we hadnt had halters on them, who knows that wouldve happened? And horses do get tangled, as said above. It's part of life.

Also, have you tried thinking about other posibilities, such as maybe the horses are boarded there, or its a rescue place, or they are just trying to find homes for horses that are already skinny when they get them? Tey to be more open-minded about the situation, because being pessimistic never gets anyone anywhere.

I have pondered the fact that they may be -trying- to rescue, but the fact that the number of horse fluctuates almost daily, makes me think less of the idea. Their property is all of 4/5 acres, totally - whats the word? Inadequate to accommodate 15+ horses/ponies.

when a horse in expectadly died at the barn we had the poor little guy covered up in the back barn for the whole weekend( he died on Friday) because the organization that takes away and burys dead horses couldn't come until Monday... It's hard because when the grounds frozen ( so u can't dig a hole) u can't just put a horse in the back of a pickup... I do not recomend listening to neighbours gossip. They could be saving horses for all you know. And if 2actually have died, well, not every horse rescued can get better again. And the tree thing sounded like a freak accident. I'm not defending them, I'm just saying... Maybe findout more info before you jump to conclusions :)

I mnet unexpectadly in my last post.

They could very well be a foster home for the spca when it is overflowing. 15 horses could have been because if they didn't put the horses there they would have had to be put down

I plan to. But I have a sick idea of what these people are like, from the lady that I talked to when I knocked on her door to get help for the runaway foal.
