Ocassionally I open my boy's mouth and just take a look at his teeth...lately I've been seeing a bunch of blackish build up around his gums at the top of one tooth (like all the way around that one tooth every time)

His gums kind of look wrinkled and squished upwards..I scratched some away and never thought about it..should I be worried about this?

If he is eating without problems & there is no foul odor I would say it is normal. If there was a problem he would have reacted in a bad way to you even touching it.
Horses don't have thick enamel like people do & their teeth can be discolored to varying degrees. Even really dirty looking teeth can be perfectly normal.
You're a very observant horse owner.:)

That's horrible, have this horse fitted with veneers! But seriously, you should have your horse's teeth & mouth checked by a vet yearly, more than likely they need a float.
