I know its Winter but I would like to prepare my horse for the upcoming summer. He is miserable in the summer! He has thin skin, reaction to fly bites and may have allergies (not sure). He is a black QH and gets almost white from the sun. He also gets summer dermatitus (at least that's what everyone is telling me it is) - scabs on his legs - can't get rid of these!!! Can anyone share with me something that might help - Bug off? any minerals that I could use to help him keep flies off of him? I have a fly sheet but he sweats like crazy in that thing!

Where I keep him boarded - she won't let me put a fan in his stall to keep the flies off. So I need help! :)

Fly sheet, fly mask, fly boots... But your horse sweats in those, so I really don't know what to tell you. Some people swear that mixing a TBSP of garlic in their horses grain ration will help with the flies, but I've never tried it. My horse gets eaten alive by flies too...My trainer loves the DuMor brand of fly spray. It's by Tractor Supply, so it must be good lol. I personally LOVE the UltraShield Green fly spray. You can spray it on the horse, you and your dog. It's a little pricey, but it works great. And if you don't want to put the fly sheet on him to keep his coat from fading, you could add that Black As Knight stuff to his feed. It'll help keep his coat black.
