I have a problem that's puzzling me.

Right now I'm jumping 18" verticals and x-rails. Occasionally doing up to 21" (about the same difference as an 18", really). I'm new to jumping, but I've been riding 12 years, did dressage for the most recent few.

Right now it seems the major issues I'm having is me snapping up too fast after I land. I did have one bad lesson where I was getting left behind, and almost came off a couple of times. Amber refused a fence for the first time ever (it was ENTIRELY my fault!). It was just a weird/bad day for us. We came back strong yesterday and my trainer thought we looked pretty good. She said our approach and take off was great, but she said the big thing is I'm snapping up too fast during the recovery. I tried it a few more times trying to stay out of the saddle a little longer but she said I was still coming back a little too fast.

I wish I had a video. I know it would be helpful, but I was still wondering if anyone could possibly give me some ideas on why I do this and how I could fix it?

i would grab mane with one or both hands, this way when your hip angle tries to open up you get stopped by your hand. this way you will be able to feel where your body should be.

Ah, see, when I grab mane, it screws me up. My trainer has tried to have me do this with pretty stinky results. I don't know why.

i would practice grabbing mane while going up into two point on the flat and over ground poles then

I had this problem too when I first started jumping. My trainer had me over-exaggerate staying down after the fence, so for a stride or two after keep your body down. Grabbing the mane is going to help you to help your horse forgive you after your mistakes. Grabbing the mane is going to prevent you from grabbing Amber in the mouth if you do come up too quickly, which she is going to be very thankful for. I would work on your awareness of her feet, you should be coming up as Amber's hind feet touch the ground, with practice you'll be able to feel when all four feet are back on the ground. Practice Practice Practice!!! And don't be afraid to ask your trainer for more advice!

I have the same problem, and I've been jumping for almost 3 years now! Does yours kinda look like this (from my very first year jumping hehe!):

What kind of saddle are you jumping in? I found that my A/P saddle with a really deep seat was hitting me in the butt over fences, which was part of my problem and the reason I developed this bad habit. Just got a close contact saddle which has a more forward flap and not as deep a seat so can't wait to see how I jump in it!

By the way, I feel ya on the grabbing the mane throwing you off, that's how I always was too! Too much to think about haha! But in the second video here I was holding onto her mane through the grid, my trainer has me doing it so that I'll follow her head and movements better, and hopefully break my habit of sitting up too soon!
