We bought this mare around 6 months ago. The people had around 15 horses and were pretty much giving them away because they were in financial trouble. Shes a 10 year old reg. appy. They told me that they only had her out with other geldings and mares, but over the past couple months she has bulked up tremendously.. I don't think its just winter fat, none of our other horses have gained this much weight.. and the weight is just in her stomache, not everywhere else.. her saddle bearly fits her anymore, I def. can't latch the rear cinch. She is acting lazy and kinda standoff-ish.. which is so not like her. I am wondering if she is pregnant.. She is just pastured, no feed, fed off a round bale, and stalled if the weather gets bad. She looks like she is walking around with a barrel in her stomache.. sometimes it is all on one side like the weight has shifted. She looks and acts uncomfterable. I swear I can feel parts when I feel on her stomache, but It could just be my imagination. I think I can feel something moving too, but again, im not sure. When you look at her from behind and in front her sides stick out. She is cocking her tail in the air when she walks.. and sometimes she has a brownish discharge. Her bag is bigger than our other mares, and her teats are swollen as well. We live in kind of a rural area, and the closest vet will charge $245.00 to come check her, and right now right before christmas, I can not afford it.
If she is pregnant, I have NO idea when she would be due.. I have NO experience w/ pregnant mares, or delievery of foals.. Ive been researching some pictures and infomation and all the pictures and signs im reading fit her to a T. Ive been reading about the waxing and she isn't getting that yet..
I'll post a couple pictures from 3 weeks ago, and since then she looks bigger.
Any advice is greatly appreciated.. I hope that after the holidays I can get her checked.. but thats just not in my budget right now.

Can you get new pics? pics of her udder? those pics are bad. I'd say shes probably just fat, but maybe not.

Its just so hard to tell by belly size. I have pastured horses who have a round bale who are definitely NOT pregnant who have that much belly or more. (including one who is male, LOL).

Pictures of her udder would help-- although some mares get swollen udders on and off for different reasons besides pregnancy-- but if it is progressively increasing in size and passes a certain point it would be more likely be because of pregnancy.If her udder IS enlarging due to pregnancy you are most likely within 60 days of delivery-- if it is progressing rapidly, most likely within 3 to 4 weeks.

You have a really pretty mare - I love her coloring! Her side profile pic does look definatly look like she's preggers but of course you can't know for sure without a vet check. Do you have any pics of her udder? You may be definatly be feeling the foal moving if she is pregnant. Can you feel any little kicks? One mare I knew had a foal that was a real kicker! Is her vulva getting looser and longer? Cocking her tail can be a sign of pregnancy thats true. As far as waxing she wouldn't get that except just before foaling.

If she is pregnant that is good that you are researching lots on the internet. You can also get books that are very informative. One that is excellent is "Blessed are the Broodmares."

I will get some pictures of her udder tomorrow.. And they have gotten larger since we have gotten her. And they are def. a lot bigger than our other mares udders.. And she started cocking her tail up a lot recently but within the past week or so she has been walking around like that constantly. I have also seen those Wee Foal pee tests online.. do those work well? Of course I would have to follow her around until she pees right??

I have no idea if she could be pregnant or if she is just gettin fat but she is gorgeous. If she is preggers and the stud looks as good as she does, that ought to be a good looking foal.

I had a mare who looked a heck of a lot more in foal than yours and was open. You just can't tell by looking, sorry! I would try a wee foal test, I like them a lot. There are lots of ways to get the urine, just google wee foal and you'll read about them. Following her around waiting for her to pee isn't necessary
