Has anyone ever heard or seen sooty effect the amount a roan roans in summer. I have a chestnut roan stallion that for the last two years hasn't really moulted in his normal roan colour. This autumn I have noticed that he is started to get sooty he has black feathers black in his tail, other blackish patches as well as being a lot dark shade of chestnut this winter.

He doesn't look all that different to me, to be honest.

I do have a question though that has bothered me for a while: how big are your Shetlands? Because yours are the chunkier body type, whenever I see pictures, I just imagine them being like fat little minis, but they're Shetlands so they must be bigger than that.. :?

This fella is 31" the black one behind him is 39" they can be anything up to 42" though I have never seen on smaller the 27" as an adult but unlike miniatures they haven't been breed to be this small so they don't have all the same problems as miniatures.

he is a cute little chunky ! less roan than in the 2012 and 2013 pics, the darker legs look more muddy/dirty in teh 2011 pic, and it also looks like he has hoof black on .
