I think its insane! stalling a horse 24/7? like whats the purpose? i understand stalling at night but thats still only from like 6 or 7 pm till 6 or 7 am.. all day is just insane. Horses need run,play, graze, and be a horse sometimes. i feel so bad for horses that have to be in a stall constantly, and then when they get taken out of there stall to ride, the horse acts up and then they get kicked whacked with a crop cause of it! i leave my horse out 24/7 and i live in michigan and on the really cold nights i will bring him in. There are many people who believe that we do more bad to horses than good. What are your thoughts?

I've never heard of anywhere that would stall a healthy horse 24/7....of course if it has some major injury, is recovering from surgery, or has just foaled like in the last 48 hours or something thats a whole other matter. my gelding is on night turn out, so he's up from about 8 in the morning to 7 or 8 at night....I usually go out and ride him like 4 times a week in the evenings, so he gets some of his energy out there too.

As for the doing more harm than good, it depends on your outlook. If you're someone who drugs for everything, worrys constantly, has your shetland pony litterbox trained.... (okay i've never seen that, but it would be kind of funny) then yeah, you will probably do the horse more harm than good. If you only interfere when really neccesary, its fine. Horses are still not domesticated animals, and sometimes people forget that I think.

I agree with you 100% If I had to have a horse stalled 24/7 I wouldn't have a horse. When I lived in Michigan, we did stall for long periods of time. It wasn't really a stall but a 20x30 barn and he had the run of the whole thing. It was only during the very worst part of the winter, but he did come out half nuts :lol::shock: I'd never do it again.

There are actually alot of jumpers and dressage horses that get stalled 24/7 other than when they ride. thats why there are so many jumpers who horses crib. and what i meant by people do more harm than good, is that horses are perfectly capable of taken care of themselves apart from food,water,shelter,hoof care. but people blanket a horse with a perfectly good winter coat, shave there horses, just silly things like that, thats all i mean. but it is a opinion based sorta thing. i just feel bad for some horses some times. and i also dont like when perfectly good horses are put out to pasture. simply because the owner doesnt have time or are lazy. DONT HAVE A HORSE! ha i like to vent sometimes. where i live there are alot of horses that are just put into pasture and if they were sold to someone who actually wants one they could be really amazing horses. i have a horse at my barn! a TB mare only 5 years old. would be a great jumper. all she has done is trail ride, and her owner has owned her for 3 almost 4 years, and she has probably been ridden twenty times during that time, her own rode her like two of that twenty. ive ridden her the rest. Her own got stuck with her as a divorce agreement. it bothersome.

I know there are a few stables around her where the horses only get turned out in 2-4 hour increments depending on the time slot they are allowed. I'm not sure I could do that... but....

its this english american language thing again! if by stall you mean something that they can only stand in, and not turn around, then i think that is cruel, apart from behavioral and emotional issues, it could have health affects too. so yes, i think that is wrong. if it is what we call a " box" in the uk , about 12'x12', then that is still not ideal,imo, but infinately better than a stall. mine are out 24/7 with unlimited access to stables, so they can wander in and out, and i think all horses should have the freedom to just be a horse, and interact with other horses, for at least several hours a day.

Unfortuately there are many stables that do just that. When i lived in NY I didn't have the room for a horse at my place so I boarded him nearby. We lived in the suburbs and land was a a very high premium. The barn I had my horse was on the fringe of the Rockefeller estate that has 4500 acres of groomed trails but the stable itself only had a few acres. They boarded ~50 horses including rentals and the only time my horse was out of his stall was either for an hour each day in a turnout (no grass) or when I rode him.

It certainly made for some interesting rides by boarders on those fired up horses.

Fortunately, when I moved to PA and now in SC, my barns have stalls but I only use them for a layup. My guys are a lot more sane that way.

Round me over winter horses have to be stabled 24/7 with turnout for mucking out and getting out when riding because the drainage isn't brillant and there isnt enough land to rotate.
