strangles question

Strangles has gone through our barn the past 2 months, it was too late to control it so we just let it run its course. My mares absess burst 2 weeks ago, and I was told that the barn owner and another girl would take care of her for me as I was stuck with tons of homework. Well they only got around to cleaning the absess twice. Now I saw her today for the first time in a month, and the hole where it was draining from had healed over but there is still a hard lump underneath. She otherwise looks perfectly healthy, so I wasn't sure if it was actually snot or not. Could she be getting another absess, or is it normal for it to be a little swollen after going through this?
