I own a paint gelding named Kai. He's in conditioning now, but next year we will begin reining training.

long story short, I received a smart Pak magazine in the mail, and I looked through it and circled a couple supplements that I wanted to look into a bit. Unfortunately I left the magazine in the sofa and my parents got ahold of it. They to say the least really aren't horse people, and It's really sweet sometimes how much they fell they need to do, but without consulting me, they ordered the three supplements last night, and I just received new of ot tonight.

I have Kai on the Purina Mills Ultium performance feed, and it already has a decent amount of vitamins and minerals, and I'm not sure if the added supplements are too much for him. If you need to check the ingredients here's the supplements on the receipt:

-SmartFlex l Maintenance
-SmartHoof
-Grand Coat

Kai is a 2 y.o. registered paint weighing in around 1000 pounds. He's very fit and on the slimmer, sleek side. But decently muscular.

I'm still kind of new to nutrition and everything, but I'm slowly learning! I really appreciate all your help, the last thing I want to do is hurt my boy <3

Those supplements probably won't hurt him at all. He probably doesn't need them...but they shouldn't hurt him. If your parents want to pay for them then by all means give them. I would be more concerned about hurting him with reining training as a 3 year old. My personal belief is that a horse shouldn't start that physical of an event until 5ish.

he gets a little under 2 pounds a day, and the supplements would be at night. Purina suggested I give him like, 5 pounds a day, waaay too much! I have no idea why they suggest such ridiculous of feed! lol

Thanks for your help guys, it really puts my heart at ease! :D

With 2lbs he is NOT getting enough for the nutrition level he NEEDS... you either need to INCREASE the amount he is getting or change him to Enrich32 :)

With his size and age, and the type of feed I'm giving him he is getting everything he needs. Ultium provides more energy to the horse, and the last thing I want is my lazy boy to turn into a stereotypical, hot 2 year old. He gets just as much as the Big boys =] I'm positive that I know how to feed my horse. (another boarder is a nutritionist, worked with me to find the right feed. And I just wanted a second opinion on the supplements)
