The state correctional Facility in Hutchinson, KS is in need of some new tack. With all the government budget problems, new tack just isn't a priority for the state.
The program is for prison inmates to gentle and break BLM mustangs for sale to the public, to help the horses find homes, and rehabilitate the inmates. It's a very good program! I, myself, just dropped off some items, and would like to encourage any Kansans on this forum to make arrangements to do so, as well.
I am willing to help collect the items for delivery, and reciepts can be provided for tax purposes. See my website for contact details and list of needed items.

They need 7-8ft leather reins, saddle pads (western saddles,too), ring snaffle bits, leather headstalls...

Why don't they make them? They have nothing but time and that would teach them another skill.

Because making a saddle without the knowledge of a horse, or experience with saddles could be potentially dangerous for the horse.

Why not make them? I'd imagine they aren't allowed those kinds of tools...sharp objects, etc,IN A PRISON and they would still have to get the materials to make them with in the first place, which still costs money.

I don't think it's wrong of them to ask for donations of good quality used items. I'm not asking for opinions, or political debate, just for potential donations for a good cause.

Depending on whether the prison has a craft shop or not, they may have access to any and all the leather working tools needed. The one that I work at here has a craft shop that has some very talented offenders that make leather goods (belts, cell phone holders, gun holsters, etc) and some that even do very good metal work for belt buckles and jewelry. Though I wouldn't trust them to make a saddle, they could easily make reins and headstalls from bulk leather (which would be cheaper too). I wish that I could send them some stuff but most of our stuff that isn't broken gets used every now and then.
