When most people think of a draft horse, draught horse, or heavy horse (same thing, different names), their mind flips strait to Clydesdales, Shires, Percherons, Belgians, and Gypsy Vanners. But what about horses like Boulonnais? Or Italian Heavy Drafts? Or perhaps a Freiberger?

Here are a few Heavy Draft Breeds I think deserve some attention:

Boulonnais

Suffolk Punch

Vladimir Heavy Draft

There are so many more. Ok... I did more than a few. But these guys deserve it. Some of these (like the Boulonnais, Suffolk Punch, and a few others, don't remember which) were actually around for a long time longer than Clydes, Shires, Gypsies, etc.

If you have a few "forgotten" breeds. Do share.

These are the horses that are so wonderful, but used only for certain things like farmwork, that soon they were forgotten. Now most of them are bred only for the meat market, which means conformation and quality deteriorates. Which is a really sad ending for these gorgeous horses with amazing personalities and histories.

I'm not saying at all that Clydes and Shires and Gypsies are bad... I'm just saying that they're not all there is.

Wow, I've never even heard of those. But then again, I'm not too familiar with drafts, LOL! They are gorgeous.

haha... it'd be fine even if you did... :p

I love Norikers, and I adore Vladimirs and Pointevins...

:D

Heh... I just have a "thing" for rare and unknown animals. Whether they be dogs, horses, cats, snakes, lizards, or... well... anything!

Well maybe if people could pronounce half of those breeds names we'd know about them

Most of them have very easy names to pronounce. And those who have names that are a bit harder are the prettier and nicer ones (better, in my opinion, to Clydes, Shires, Vanners, and Percherons).

The biggest problem with these horses is not that they're extremely rare, or that they're extremely expensive or even ugly.

The problem is that people see certain breeds, and ignore the rest (e.g. Clydes, Shires, Vanners, Percherons, Belgians). They see the beauty in one, and due to bad pictures in books (gets really annoyed) people think that the rest are ugly, when in actuality, they're not!

I am NOT at all saying that CSVPB (look above) are ugly... I'm just saying that they're taking up all the space, while these other horses get left behind. :)

Oh, it's wonderful that you've put this up here!

I love drafts and have several, yeah, four are Gypsies, but I do have an Ardennes...

I can try to get pictures of some of these breeds at my stable if you like -- we have several "different" drafts.

Great photos. A lot of these drafts tho, if not most that were posted are not forgotten, you just need to go to Europe where they are located!!:D

Does our Nordsvenska Bruksh盲st (''north swedish draft/work horse''..I don't know if they have an english name..) fit here? :p
They're not as big as many others, but they're known to pull untill they manage to move the carriage/log or dies. Where the much bigger ardenner gives up, the Nordsvensk just pulls untill he gets the carriage/log/whatever moved.

This is Dacke :p He's horribly fat and out of shape.. and doesn't have that lovely mane I love with them.. but still. xD

Btw.. the Dole (or D枚le as we call them) is actually a race horse :p
The north swedish horse had a lighter sub-breed or what to call it. north swedish trotter, that had the same registers as D枚le before. Now they've changed names and cut the bonds to the north swedish draft, and the trotter is just called coldblooded trtter. But i'f I'm not wrong, kallblodstravaren/coldblood trotter can still breed with Dole.. or something like that. I'm nt into racing anyway xD
