Hi there people’s! Was hoping to get some input from some of y’all regarding this 5 year old gelding I’m looking into adopting. The owner doesn’t know too much about horses and he’s kind of just been sitting around. He has a bone chip that’s been identified by the rescue when he came off the track and was “diagnosed sound”, but the owner doesn’t know the location of the chip (somewhere in one of the front legs). Anyways, I think he’s a pretty guy and I wouldn’t mind having the vet come out to take a couple X-rays of his legs. My hopes would be to possibly get him into the jumper ring. I do notice something off in the video though. Seems like his stride is a little off and shortened. Not sure if that’s from lack of muscle tone or something that could possibly effect his soundness on the future. Lmk any critics you guys might have on this guys build.. Thank you and God bless 🙏

One problem youll run in to is that if you look at any horse long enough, itll look lame. I know it sounds crazy but its true. I would definitely get radiographs BEFORE getting attached to the horse. Bone chips can move and shift causing other issues. The can, however, often fuse back to existing bone and not be an issue. They can also be surgically removed.

I never thought about it, but I think what @wvfarrier said might be true. You kind of 'find' lameness if you look at a video 'for' it. Any how, to me, his hind end looks 'uncomfortable'. His stride in the rear is short and he is 'stabbing' at the ground a bit. He swishes his tail, too , and to me, I would look carefully at his stifles and hips. He seems like a sweet and willing ,if heavy, horse.

Thank you for your response! I’ve heard of them being removed as well as fusing together, it just sounds so scary. Don’t know if it’s worth making the financial commitment at this point but he does need a home!! 😭

Ok!! I definitely saw that too but I can’t really identify where it’s coming from. I feel like it takes a good eye to see issues in the stifles. I’ll be looking into potential costs to keep him sound and making my pro con list! Thank you!
I wouldn't take any off track horse with a known injury if you want to use him for jumping. Even minor injuries can develop into arthritis at a young age, and OTTBs have enough difficulty staying sound without injuries. I think if you want to use a horse for athletic pursuits, you should not buy one that has been injured when young.

Conformation\ it is hard to tell from the photos he looks okay. He does not look quite right behind. Based off of the video he does not look like a good jumper prospect. He looks very short behind.
