I board my mare at my friend's 7 stall barn that she rents from someone else. There are currently 11 horses living there. There are no extras shelters, and the 2 paddocks are barely an acre each. When I originally moved my mare there, there was only 3 horses including her living there. Since then she has moved all of her horses to this barn and took on 3 new boarders. I have not said a thing since I can just afford to keep Athena there, and she has a stall. At least, I thought she did.

I want my horse to have a clean stall. I'm very picky about how clean I keep it. I pick it every time I'm there, and I gut it completely once a week. It's always clean. Me and one other boarder like to keep our stalls this clean. They way you're supposed to! I mean, who wants to sleep in excrement?! So the others don't clean their stalls very often, if at all. Usually they'll buy the shavings, and I end up cleaning them. Which part of the agreement was for me to help clean the stalls.

I pay about $12 a week to buy the shavings. I'm 19, with 2 part-time jobs and the pay is crap. I can just afford this. I still live with my parents, I don't have a car. My parents don't mind this, and as long as I'm the one paying all the expenses for my horse it's fine.

Since I like to keep my stall this clean, it has attracted others.
There have been many times where I'll unexpectedly come to the barn, and some other horse is in my stall. Which is nice and clean, and my horse is standing in excrement in another. This boils my blood like nothing else!

I don't explode in a fit, but it's clearly written on my face that I'm NOT happy. Every time this has happened my friend would get all nervous and would end up switching the horses back before leaving suddenly.

I don't buy shavings for all the horses, I buy shavings for Athena. I WANT her in a clean stall. It's not my fault she can't afford to buy shavings for the other 4 stalls.

The other day both the other boarder who cleans her stall often and I, had bought new bags of shavings, gutted our stalls, and left because our horses were staying out.

Well my friend and her son, wanted to go to a fun show the next day, so they came while we were gone, cleaned up their horses, and stuck them in our stalls for the night. We came the next morning to find dirty stalls and a wheelbarrow next to the stalls with clean shavings and crap in it. They attempted to clean the stalls before we got there.

I was NOT happy. I called her, and left a message to PLEASE stop doing this. I was very nice, and straight to the point. She texted me a 5 page text basically saying we share everything at that barn, and if you don't want to share then don't buy shavings. And if you don't like it get out.

So I guess I'm leaving!

I've never heard of a 5 page text before.

Yes, it's time to move your horse. Past time, actually.

You've allowed your 'friend' to take advantage of you by not calling her out on her shoddy behaviour before now. Now that you have, she's annoyed.

If you hope to salvage this friendship, and even if you don't, it's time to find other accommodations for your critter.

Good luck.

Wow. I feel your anger. I'd definitely move her. You're right: you buy shavings for YOUR horse, and not everyone else's. I hope you have somewhere else you can go! :)

LOL I've sent a 3 page text message before. QWERTY keyboards help.

But hey, I would have done the same thing. Actually I would have called her out every time there was another horse in my stall. If she wanted to pay me extra to clean all of the horses stalls, she could most certainly do that. But my stall is my stall.

I used to part board and bought my own shavings and cleaned my own stall. I would be LIVID if someone else was putting their horse in my stall and using my shavings. Friend or not. Glad you're getting out. You should be able to find another reasonable partial board facility. Good luck!

Your horse will be happier with the 30 acres of green grass anyway

Good choice.
I know if someone moved my horse and took my stall, I'd be furious, too. Especially when paying for your own shavings! If they're going to use your stall, they should pay for the shavings themselves...

How'd it work out with the friend?
You definitely made the right choice. You are doing so much to provide for your horse, who isn't even getting all the benefit! Some "friend" there..

I would have been ****ed if someone did that to me. I wish I could say I would have said something right away but I'm a wimp. I avoid confrontation at all cost (except when someone is hurting a friend of mine. If they are hurting/annoying me I'll stay quiet, touch my friends or a helpless animal and I'm in in their face so fast) So I would have kept going until I got a text like that then I would have been gone so fast there head would spin. Good for you finding a better place for your horse.

That would've drove me banana sandwich. The barn I previously had my horses at it was known you just didn't touch anyone else's shavings. We all had our own shaving sheds though and everyone was really respectful.

After I told her I was moving my mare she actually helped find someone to haul her for me, and she said "no hard feelings". Sooo I guess I didn't burn a bridge. Which I really didn't want to do. I've known the lady and her family for almost a decade, so it would've been nasty if we became enemies. I agree she wasn't being very good friend material, and that I let her push me around for a while. Thankfully, it's all over.

Thanks everyone for being so understanding!

Now she's lives on 30 acres with one gelding. It's actually a horse I used to own, they're old buddies that are constantly attached to the hip. So I'm sure she's happy with her old boyfriend.

I can only imagine what you're going through. I would be furious if the same thing were happening to me. I couldnt imagine spending that money(especially when you are in a financial situation already), and others using your equipment. I find it pretty rude on the owners end to not even try to understand what's going on from your side. You are one of the original boarders so I find it quite rude on their end to not be loyal to you and rectify what's going on.
I hope you can find a solution that can still be affordable. I can't imagine the stress you're going through right now. Good luck with everything.
