How old is your horse?
How long has your horse been doing these events?
Did you train her, or did someone else?

Without more details or videos, I would assume that your horse has holes somewhere in her training and/or needs to be more broke. It sounds like she does not understand what is expected of her. And possibly gate sour (since she wants to run back to the gate).

If your horse is not listening to you, it's either because she doesn't understand what you want and/or needs more training in order to be responsive to your cues. These issues are always magnified when you try to add SPEED to the mix.

My mare is 11 i have owned her for 2 years so i don't know if she has done them before but i know she has done pony club at her previous home. I have only started getting into things other then trail riding and mustering cattle this year so not long. i don't expect us to be perfect at it or anything i am just looking on some tips to help us become better. for the pole bending and flag race i do it it in a trot and for the barrel racing its a trot/ canter. as i know its more about the technique and less about the speed hint to why i haven't added much speed until we get it down in a trot. i am not doing the competition to win its more about the experience. i think its more of a shes not listening my cues (she can be quite stubborn at times) and i need to be more strong with them. do you know any exercises that could help with out actually doing the patterns.

There are tons of youtube videos that can show you how to get the pattern on your mare. But if there are holes in the fundamental training then those should be looked at first. It sounds like the mare has been allowed to head back to the gate and has learned that if she heads back to the gate then the event is over. I've never had this issue, but I have heard the advice given that working them harder by the gate can sometimes get that idea out of their minds.

And yes there are tons of exercises that aren't the pattern that can help out. I don't know if I am allowed to put the link, but there is a site called Barrel Racing Tips. She has tons of ideas an things that you can try for a plethora of problems.

There really aren't any special exercises. The best thing you can do to improve your horse is making her more broke and getting her better about responding to your cues.

Do you mind my asking how old you are?
Do you have access to a trainer or someone who is more experienced?

Making your horse more broke is about delivering the cue correctly, and then making sure to RELEASE the cue when the horse responds correctly to what you asked. If you release your cue too soon or too late, the horse doesn't learn the right thing. This is where it can be really help to work with someone in person to see how you are cueing and how your horse is responding.

And don't think of it as "My horse is being stubborn." She's had 11 years to learn bad habits so she's just relying on what she has learned and done in the past. It takes time to teach them new things and how to respond correctly. Keep in mind it often takes longer to change bad habits, that it does to teach them correctly in the first place.

I am 15 and my uncle and a couple of my cousins have been the ones to teach me how to ride and give me lessons. it can be a bit difficult to get a lesson with any of them since they have stuff to do.

Just ride more. In side or out. Not just competition patterns. Work on getting her soft. Get her turning stopping starting with the softest slightest cues. Release immediately. Sounds like you are on a working ranch or farm. If you can, work some cows with her. Become partners, a team. Don鈥檛 quit practice in your chosen events. Just become partners. Do you ride with a quirt or crop? If so learn to use it properly when she balks. Could be she doesn鈥檛 understand. Could be she is being hard headed. If she understands 90% of the time, and you are consistent, she is being hard headed. Don鈥檛 get angry. Just be consistent and insist on a consistent response. Make it easy for her to succeed.

Oh pressure and release. When you are working in a competition pattern make her complete it. When she completes it even if it鈥檚 ugly. Praise her and do. Half hour on the trail or something you both enjoy. Teach Her the way she gets out of that work in by doing it right the first time.

Please don't take this as being rude, but honestly there are some horses you can do multiple patterns with, and some that you cannot. My horse did not get better until I stopped doing gymkhana patterns and just focused on the basics like barrels and poles. Your horse sounds confused on what to do.
