I am nearing 40 and this summer....after a long hiatus from horses i purchased a horse for my kids and self to use......trail rides...etc...but also my daughter wanted to lrean barrels she is 8.....this horse is a great kids ...family type horse and i purchased with advice from a trainer.....he ran barrels for years but the owners grandkids no longer rode so that's why sold ( she was sole owner). Once we got him home i actually started to toy with the idea of barrels ( small local shows....he is 17 so we won't be bringing home any buckles) .......right now i have started having my trainer teach me ( not the horse....i suspect most days he rolls his eyes at me).....and we masteredthe trot barrels in good form and now need to move to the lope.....
Any other older beginners out there?
Have i lost my mind?
This is sort of always been on my bucket list.....even if all i do is lope the barrels at the little shows......

He has the big bottom with bumpy trot so not a western pleasure horse....i thought this would be a good way to use him....
I have gained so much more confidence doing this ironically compared to trail riding!
Btw i am able to ride him about 3 days a week and have an indoor arena where i board so i can practice through winter....

Of course you're not too old. Heck, if you get good at this with your 'family' horse, maybe you'll want to buy a second younger horse that is truly capable of being competitive and then you'll be off to all the rodeos picking up some jackpot money:D.

Best of luck and make sure you always enjoy yourself around the horses!
