My mare grazes with 7 other horses, one of which is almost 30 and in bad condition. Whenever we go to the paddock about a 3rd/quarter of her tongue is poking out-and staying there. Any idea what it could be? Teeth problems? An old harmless habit? Mouth/gum pain?
I really don't want her in pain and just want some answers, thanks.:?

I would get the vet out and he can, if something is wrong, recommend a specialist. I see it all the times in dogs, but not horses. Good luck

If the poor girl is 30 and in poor condition then do the right thing and put her down. Horses that old rarely improve in condition.

I'd check with the vet just in case, but hey Richard Spooners horse Robinson does the same thing. =P

I dont think it was the OPs horse that was 30 and in bad condition. I read it as there was another horse out WITH her horse that was.

Anyways, I have seen several horses that stick their tongues out.

But, I would be worried if it was a sudden recent occurrance.

Definitely have the vet out, but dont be TOO worried, if she/he is eating and drinking fine and otherwise healthy, it might just be a new strange habit.
My NSH Flops his lower lip when he's tired of standing on the cross ties....

I'm not sure if its always happened, she only just moved to our paddocks. Hmm... When the others let her, she will eat hay. Ill talk to her owner and then update ya'll. Thanks so much for your help.
