This summer we explored the most beautiful part of the Caucasus - Svanetia - on horseback and wanted to share our impressions:

As the roads are quite bad there, horse tours are probably one of the best options. You may hire a local guide but to our surprise, it was also possible to hire only the horses without any guide and explore on your own. Small local horses are perfect for the mountains and they are well trained. Our only criticism is the saddles: they consist of a metal carcass and a thin cushion :)

For more detailed description and more pictures you may check our travel blog :gallop:

We also wrote about horseback rides in Cappadocia on Arabian racehorses and our riding experience in Croatia. A detailed report on horseback tours in Ethiopia, South Africa and Brazil are soon to come :)

wow! such adventures. What country were you in? I mean, is this UZbeckistan, or Georgia? I'm sorry, but don't the Causcus mountains cover several countries? ARmenia? my geography is weak in that area.

isn't it a bit dangerous to camp out there? When I travelled through Yugoslavia, many years ago before it split apart, I did not think it would have been safe to camp out there..

Beautiful pictures and very interesting to see. It sounds like a great adventure. I also liked the posts on riding the Arabians in Cappadocia and the horses in Croatia.

Do you know what breed of horse was in Croatia? The only breeds I have seen photos of from Croatia are heavy draft horses.

I also love riding unusual breeds in other countries and around the U.S. In foreign countries so far, Icelandic horse in Iceland, Japanese Dosanko in Japan, Thoroughbred in Western Australia, Irish Draught in Ireland. Hawaii is in the U.S. but it was interesting to ride there too.

Please share your other riding experiences! Your blog is great. It helps me learn about places I'd love to visit and ride. One place on my list is Mongolia.

@tinyliny: Hi, Svanetia is a part of Georgia, I dare say its most beautiful part :) It used to be dangerous in the 90th but now it is pretty safe as the rest of Georgia is. The only exception is controlled by Russia Adjara. Traveling in Georgia, we never had a feeling of being in danger even an unwanted attention like it is often the case in Africa. Camping in Croatia, Montenegro and Macedonia is also safe and easy, but Bosnia and Herzegovina was too densely populated and it was difficult to find a place for a campsite even traveling by 4x4.

@gottatrot: Thank you for your kind words! In Croatia we wrote Holstain, Arabian and English pure blooded horses.

Here is the owner of that ranch in Croatia (Konijcki Klub Rakovica) Dubravko and his horses (image by Dubravko)

I love your plan about riding in Mongolia - a friend of mine who did it liked it very much, the only thing she didn´t quite enjoy were the saddles
