So today I go out to the barn a little later than usual, so there are lesson kids running around and tacking up their horses. I have Ice in the cross ties, waiting on the round pen to clear up--the western trainer was working with a 3 y/o on her manners. Usually, Ice only tolerates having his face touched, and he absolutely hates having his muzzle petted. Well, one of the little girls walks right up to him and starts messing with his head and face, and he's totally in love with it! He puts his ears forward and puts his "little boy" look on, where he softens up his eyes, breaks at the poll, and compiled with his short mohawk of a forelock, he looks like a little kid. I reach out to pet him while the little girl is still standing there, thinking "oh, he's gonna be a butt head to me now" and he's not! He almost leaned in to my hand actually. I'm completely appalled and the little girl goes on to get her horse from his stall.
Ten minutes later, I do the same thing to him, just reach out and pet him as I walk by, and he makes a sour face. I swear horses are way smarter than we give them credit for.
