Umbilical Hernia?

Hi there,

I have a filly who will be 2 months old on the 24th. She doesn't seem to have lost her umbilical stump and the area kind of looks "loose" for lack of a better term. I've emailed my vet as well, but probably won't hear back until at least tomorrow, so I'm wondering what you all think and if this is just normal for her age. How long does it usually take for them to lose their umbilical stump?

Wrecker had the same thing. (As do all babies) but...Wrecker did have a hernia and it didn't close on its own. She had to have it surgically repaired.

When you touch her umbilical cord, is there a hole in the abdominal wall? If there is one, it'll be right there. The intestine can literally be pushed up into the abdominal cavity.

If there is no hole, she's perfectly fine and the stump will fall off soon. It took awhile for Wreckers to fall off. And if she has a hernia, keep an eye on it. Wreckers got large enough that I could push 4 fingers up into the wall and it was starting to get hard/blocked. So I took her in for surgery at...3 months. It was no big deal and she recovered quickly and very very well.

If you go back through Wreckers growing up thread (if you have extra time on your hands), you'll find pictures of her hernia somewhere in there.

Well that's a relief that you guys don't think it is one. I'll see what the vet says too. I did feel around there, and it seemed to just feel like loose skin, but I've never really felt what a hernia is "supposed" to feel like, so didn't really know what I was looking for. There doesn't seem to be any cavity of any sort that I can remember, but I'll take another feel next week, just in case. And the stump looks like it should be ready to come off any day now. Sometimes, I see it almost "billowing" in the breeze, so to speak and I wonder why it hasn't dropped off yet. It was more the loose flap of skin on her abdomen that had me wondering.

And yes, Wallaby, I know, time has flown - although, Lilly did keep us all waiting, practically forever, so it seems like just a few days ago for me too! :)
