So I have decided this year to really dedicate 2014 to gaining as many new horse related experiences as possible! However, I'm pretty stuck right now as far as brainstorming goes. I have had a horse for 4 years and have been working at a boarding barn for over 6 months and I know that whatever I do in my future I want to do with horses. I'm a strong believer in learning things while your young so I'm really trying to get as much in as possible while I have the time. I'm a junior in high school this year so I had wanted to shadow or intern with different people in the industry this summer to get more of a feel for what I want to do and what I should take in college. ANY ideas y'all have for different kinds of companies or trades I should look into, camps, farms, ranches, day trips, ANYTHING horse related that might be different. I live in Virginia but love road trips so anything in a nearby state would be great too! I'm looking for adventures so no idea is too crazy. Riding related, horse health related, or even just horse appreciation related. Honestly I'll take whatever you've got :) Thanks!!

  • Swimming with your horse <3 (more fun with warm water)
  • Beach riding! Preferably at sunset
  • Find a trail to ride in, sleep out, and ride back out the next day! Bring a buddy so your not alone maybe :)
  • Try a discipline you haven't done, make sure your horse is up for it too.

If you want to work with horses I would shadow with multiple horse trainers, lesson instructors, become a groom, equine vets/chiropractors and etc. As well as learn a new discipline or two.

I see a lot of interns from colleges come out to the barn with the desire to be horse trainers until they actually start interning/shadowing with a trainer. It seemed like the first hard/crazy horse they got that was meaner than a snake made them turn to a different career.

These are some great ideas! Some I haven't thought of! I originally learned to ride english but have ridden western since I got my horse. I'm hoping to take reining lessons this summer :) So you could say I'm especially interested in any western activities.
