I have had my 13 year old mare to 4 different vets now! My mare has had a come and go snotty nose on the RIGHT side since last winter. First vet said it was allergies to maybe something in the air and that it should clear up when the weather changed. O.K.-it didn't. It comes and goes only out of the right side nostril dripping yellow green "pudding". It clears up for a couple weeks then comes back. She has not had any weight issues with this but I wanted to make her quality of life a little less "snotty"!
When I moved, I had a different vet out in the spring and she said it was probably allergies too and not to worry about it. I questioned it only being on the one side and she said it happens? WTF- but hey I don't have the degree so I said we'll see. Fall arrived and it came back, as did the vet. A different one this time. He prescribed SMZ's which cleared it up and said if it came back after this antibiotic then bring her to the office and he would scope it.
So it cleared for a few weeks up but came back. He scoped it and checked her teeth. He found nothing but refered me to a well know vet hospitol an hour or so away. I loaded up and took her there for a scope of the gluteral pouches (previous vet couldn't access due to his scope being too big). The vet hospitol found passages clear so they took head x rays. They found on the RIGHT side the sinus cavity denser than the left and a cracked tooth on the top LEFT. I asked if it could possibly be related and he said no because it is on different sides of the face. O.K.- makes sense. He suggested pulling the tooth and more antibiotics to see if it cleared up. He wanted to DRILL into the sinus cavity to flush and drain it but I didn't have the $1000, so I opted for the tooth removal first to see if maybe this would make her more comfortable. He attempts to pull the tooth and only gets half of the split tooth out and says maybe that the rest (meaning the root and other half of the tooth) will work it's way loose and fall out on it's own! He only tried maybe 45 minutes to get it all out! They sent me home with drugs and little info as to what to do. I was asking ?'s but I didn't get but only a few words in response! I asked more and they seemed annoyed and bothered-so what if it was a Monday and it was almost closing time! It's your job to help people and animals. They had no personnality and crappy people skills there! They acted like since it was not a big money horse and just a back yard trail horse they didn't want to waste their time and effort on it. I don't think I will be doing any business there again!!:evil:
So disgusted and with a drained bank account, I get home and I called my home vet (who refered me) and told him what just happened. He told me that it usually takes at least 2 hours to get a tooth out! He also informed me that it would probably get impacted and infection would set in after the drugs were finished since they didn't put a cap or a plug on it. He said he could get the tooth out but he would have to go in through the TOP with a punch and knock it out! YUCK! He also said while she was down he would created a drain for her right sinus and flush it to see if that would clear it up. So now I am waiting on the vet to arrive and this all started with just a snotty nose issue! I have owned horses for twenty years and have never had anything like this occur. Has this happened to anyone else?:-?
