My horse has 4 white legs, and no matter what I do, he always gets them dirty while in his stall the night before a show.

I use extra bedding, but he always gets stained.

I was thinking of using some vet wrap on his hocks and knees so they won't get dirty over night... have you ever done this? If so, how does it work and what are some precautions I can take?

It would only be for one night (From around 5 pm to 6 am)... but I don't want him to be uncomfortable.

What do you think?

i think you should just wash them in the morning lol... wont take that long

Vet wrap isn't supposed to be used without padding underneath, according to something I've read somewhere...it's stretchy and too easy to get too tight without the bandages underneath to protect the tendons. If you don't want to wash them, you might try some inexpensive quilted bandages under the vet wrap.

It's not hard to give legs a quick scrub in the morning. You can get stain remover that will work a treat. Bandaging joints as definitely not something that I'd advise, even for medical reasons vets try to avoid bandaging joints unless absolutely necessary. You can do a lot of damage and unless you are very good at bandaging, it's likely that the wrap will just slide down the leg during the night as the horse moves around and end up getting tangled. Also, as Ladytrails said - please don't use vet wrap without padding as it can tighten around the leg causing pressure sores and bruising, as well as damaging tendons.

A couple of spot washes the next morning is a far more viable option.

My old man has high whites. I had to keep all the white on his legs shaved during show seasons. It made keeping them clean much easier.

I would bathe him well the night before. Add liberal quantities of something like show sheen to hocks and knees (they seem to aim for manure piles when they are clean). The next morning spot cleaning was easy.

Showsheen - yes!

It also helps to clip. Less hair to retain the stain.

putting vet wrap on your horses legs over night and with out a protective bandage is very dangerous, vet wrap sticks to itself b.c it tightens, either wash him in the morning, or use standing wraps.
