my friend has a sister who's 9 and she barely knows how to ride... but since shes the baby of the family, she's spoiled she has a horse anyway, good thing her horse is such a saint! anyway, she rides her horse maybe once a month and grooms her maybe once a hear, yet she brags how amazing her horse is,,,,,, Enough of getting off topic. her horse is skin and bones, but she doesn't need fat, she needs muscle. me and my friend have permission from her mom to exercise the horse while the little sister is inside. we have been riding her every single day, and she hasn't got one ounce of muscle put on her! Got any tips on what we can do to give her some muscle???

hmmm, make sure your pushing her limits each time you ride, as in, ride her until she gets damp (not exactly sweaty, but damp is enough) each day. :) work on different excercises to improve different muscles and make her more elastic and responsive.

That horse sounds extremely wormy; I would be getting a fecal done, and subsequently worming her, to take care of the load she has. A horse that is 'bony' over his body, but has a pot belly, most likely has round worms, among others...NOT good for the horse...she needs veterinary care, not more work at this point.

we JUST wormed her 3 weeks ago today. she is 17 has had a L O T of babies, though. we had the vet out last month and he said she is quite healthy, and her years as a broodmare probably caused all her weight to drop to the bottom. i am by all means not trying to prove you wrong, you and i both know what you're talking about. im just stating the facts i know and was told by her vet. anyway, she rides great otherwise. she never shows any stress, pain, exhaustion or hesitation under saddle and she ALWAYS has the same happy-go-lucky personality, and she's never acted any other way.

Well, she could have weak abdominal muscles, but usually they won't be 'bony' persay over their topline, ribs and hips...they will just look perpetually pregnant.

Pictures could help, so I can visualize better what you are talking about.

actually, it's mostly in the winter that she gets this way and she beefs up just a hair during the summer, (the other 3 horses stay beefy year-round.) but summer is nearly over. she got a little better around may, but hasn't changed since then. i'll try to get a picture of her the next time i see her, which will probably be in two or three days.
