The horse is 5-6 yrs old, between 14 to 14.5 to 15 hands. She said the mother was part mustang . Pretty horse but it is sort of smallish but I'm thinking I can fatten it up over time. I know it won't get any taller, but how much can I put on weight wise and also can I put on alot of muscle to it? I want to add a good bit of muscle and definitely fatten her up very well.
Thoughts?

There is no such thing as 14.5 in height. :wink: Also 14 and 15 is rather big difference so be careful about it. I went to look at 14'1 horse once. Not positive he was even 13 hh!

She said they just broke her. I'm trying to post an image. I also tried to add it to my sig but it says the max size of an image in a sig is 468 x 60. Smallest option at tinypic.com is 100 x 75. How would I get an image here. I actually pasted the link from tiny pic in my reply, highlighted, then clicked on image on top of box here and pasted the image link in it and hit enter. I'm not sure how good rider you are and how many horses you trained but "just broke" horses usually LOTS of work and need a professional trainer/instructor to progress.

yes I know the fencing is terrible! I will have that horse looking much better. I am going to use rope wire also. My whole setup is going to look 1 million times better than that. I am a neat freak. I'm not sure how to measure hands but I am going to google right now. That's why i made this thread to ask if its possible I can get her more muscular and stuff? I know i can deworm her real good and immunize her and fatten her up and get that coat shiny. I hope too I can get her muscle tone much better. When I said 14 or so hands I was guesstimating.

she said she would take 500 but i dont know or think its worth that much not sure. Will have my dad go with me to look at her. We will indeed ride her and stuff a good 30 mins to an hr before we decide. Also, I got to make sure I want something that small. I think for me being 5' 11 205, I might need to go with something at least 14 to 15 hands minimum. But i definitely plan on fattening her up and bulking up as well. You think she will be able to get much thicker?

check her teeth, she looks quite young to me, she has that babyish look to her face that is normaly outgrown by the time they are 4!

If you want to build muscle, give her lots of protein and lots of hill work. That will get her in shape in no time at all.

BTW, I think she's a beauty.

yes, me and my dad will look this horse over good and spend maybe an hr with her before we make our decision. We will look her over thouroughly and both us ride her as well. Especially if we spend 500 bucks in the condition she looks

From your description she sounds too small for you. She is not a huge build and she isn't tall. If you are 5'11 I would be looking at minimum 15hh. I am 5'7 and unless the horse were very large (like a heavy breed cross or a very bulky QH) anything under 15hh would be too small for me.

A just broke horse is not suitable for a beginner. It takes years of training and a wonderful temperament for the horse to be suitable for a beginner. A young, untrained horse needs an experienced, confident and independent rider to safely ride them and further their training.

If I were you I would look for a different horse that is larger and has solid training.

Hmmmmmmm...... :lol: I'm 5'8" and my qh is 14'3. She definitely is not small (and doesn't look like) for me.

I agree with everything else though. Unless you are experienced green broke horse is a tough and often frustrating road.

There isn't much between 14.3 and 15, nor between 5'7 and 5'8.

Its not just height though, its weight, length of thigh, length of torso that effects the rider. Your proportions are going to be different to mine. As I said, a smaller QH I could get away with, but the one the OP pictured doesn't look very substantial build wise or tall, and the OP is a fair amount taller than both of us.

Appropriate height depends on the horse, I've ridden 16hh TBs that look too small for me, where as a more solid 15hh horse is ideal.
