Hello! I currently have a Welsh X mare, 13.3 hh, a little on the chubby side. She is without a saddle that fits super well. She is a pony, so there are not a lot of whithers on her. She also has a shorter back as most ponies do. I have never really bought a saddle so specific before, so I have no clue where to start. I would also prefer to find a used saddle somewhere or a synthetic saddle as this mare is just for trail rides and such. Not looking to spend much. Does anyone have any ideas on what could work for her? A gullet size? A specific brand? When I place my typical horse saddle on her, the back of the skirt sticks up a little bit and the saddle is just a tad too long. There is also a huge gap between the gullet and withers. That gap goes all the way through the saddle until about the middle of the seat. The saddle is finally laying on her at that middle section under the seat. I am pretty sure this is not very comfortable for her, but I also don't want to spend loads on a brand new, custom saddle. Thanks in advance!

(I am new to this forum site, so let me know if I am doing anything wrong or posting something in the wrong spot :) )

Can you post pictures of your horse? That may help.

I used to have a Welsh/Nokota horse. Also 13.3 hands. She was pretty wide (and usually fat....) and actually rode well in a full quarter horse bars saddle.

If your saddle is coming up in the back, the something on the front is too wide. Could be gullet. Could be bar angle. But it will cause the saddle to tip forward, tip downhill.

I'm not sure what you mean when you say there is a gap between the gullet and withers. Up and down, or side to side?

Can you post pictures? Best to do the saddle only on your horse (no pad, not cinched).

I have a filly with a wide back. My old roping saddle with a 6 1/2" gullet became too narrow for her as she grew, A friend of mine had a Circle Y barrel saddle with aide 7" gullet and it fits great, You might try and see if anyone has one that you know that you could try,

I downloaded your picture since it was upside down, so I could flip it! That saddle is too wide (sitting downhill) and is too long for the pony's back.

It's hard to tell from your photo what exactly is too wide since you did not include a bar angle / shoulder photo. It could be the gullet. It could be the bar angle. It could be both.

Okay. I noticed that and knew something was off. Do you recommend a certain size saddle that might work? I may try a round skirt and get a youth size saddle in 14 inch. I'm tiny so hopefully, I'll fit in the seat haha.

As far as barrel saddles go, 14 inches usually is not youth LOL. (I swear that most of the barrel saddles I see for sale by adults are 14 inches but I digress.

Round skirt may help.

Honestly, it's impossible to recommend a certain saddle because there is no standard in the western industry. One company may call their tree a semi-QH bar and it might be the same as the next company's full-QH bars.

It's trial and error to find something that fits.

What brand is the one that you first provided pictures for?
What size as far as bars? (there should be a serial number that you can look up that information)
