I saw these guys on a rescue website a few years ago. Apparently the green eyes are caused by a cream or pearl dilution but the horses are brown so what would you call their coloring--
I would guess they are more hazel-ish eyes. I've seen similar eyes on some Rocky Mountain horses with similar color. Hopefully a color-pro comes on - is the eye color attached to a gene I wonder?
Three look like amber champagnes, but the second from the top reminds me of a grulla - I think it's mostly the face mask.
If I remember correctly, champagnes have blue eyes when they're born, and then they turn green, then hazel, then brown - but they can stop changing colour at any point. I don't know of any other dilutions that cause green eyes, except maybe pearl - I'm not sure.
Most horses have brown eyes but other eye colors are seen. These eye colors can include blue, green, yellow, amber, or hazel. Most variation in eye color is the result of a white pattern or dilution.
Champagne or double dilutes can show amber or green eyes. One cream doesn't have much of an effect. Not that it can't just that it isn't typical or extreme.
Oh, that's what the second from the top reminded me of - smokey grulla. It's a pretty rare colour, though, so the chances of it being that are fairly slim... But I'm not seeing champagne in it, somehow.
Hm, after writing all that I looked at the photos again and realised that its face is wet. Maybe that's why I'm having so much trouble with it.
From what I understand champagne horses have the mottled brown skin around their eyes, nose, etc. But these horses have the normal dark brown skin so I didn't know what to think. Anyway thanks to all who replied--very interesting!
