I ride a pony for my barn owner and I can't find a saddle in the barn that fits him. He is 12 hh, no withers at all, and he is round. I know you aren't really supposed to use a half pad for saddle fit issues but I use one anyways because we jump. When I look for a half pad, should i get one with front shims or risers or back risers to keep his saddle from sliding forward. His saddle ALWAYS slides forward onto his neck no matter how tight his girth is. What type of half pad would prevent this? (not a specific brand, just front risers or back risers. I normally use a flat half pad. Thanks in advance!!

No half pad is going to make a narrow saddle fit better. Get something wider and then pad to fit failings in the flocking if reflocking the saddle is not an option. If it's sliding down his neck then it's far too narrow. you CAN fit a pony appropriately. It just takes a slightly wider tree and sometimes a few "accessories"

For sliding once the fit of the saddle is corrected- a crupper and a good girth with a broad center might suit. Add a breastplate if the lack of a wither issue is making it slip back over fences.

Why do you use a half pad just because you jump? How does the saddle fit if you ride without the half pad?

I have used multiple saddles and I can't find one that works even with different gullets. Since he is not mine and he is just a lesson pony I ride over the weekend i have no accesories for him. Thank you for your help though! I will try to find a much wider saddle somewhere in the barn.

I use a half pad not just because I jump even though I said that. I just like a half pad for some extra cushion for him. Also when you are jumping it's good to have some extra cushion under the saddle even if you don't slam back down into the saddle. I have ridden with no half pad before and it slides forward. I have like 20 saddles to choose from so I will see which one works. Thanks!
