I know my Warmblood filly is brown, but was wondering what shade of brown she would be considered? Her breeder is going to register her soon and I want to out the proper colouring down to make things exact if I can. She is fluffy atm, getting her winter coat so is quite dark right now.

I dont really know if there is a "shade" scale for brown. Brown is brown. That is what you register her as. The same would go if she were bay, black, chestnut, palomino, etc

If you really wanted to call her something other than just brown, you could say seal brown because she's so dark.

Seal brown and brown are the same thing. Seal brown is what the researchers who isolated the gene named it and it's been shortened to just "brown" colloquially.

I haven't heard any shade descriptors attached to brown/seal brown.

Breed registries usually only have set colors you can choose from to describe the color of your horse. I would check to see what color choices are available before trying to get too fancy with her color.

There really aren't "shade" designator for brown, as others have said. This is probably due to the fact that brown, as a genetically recognized color, is still relatively new and many people still insist that their brown horses are just dark bays.

It is not all about "precision" other than maybe seeing two bays in a field and maybe pointing out one from the other by saying, "The lighter/darker one." "Mahogany" and "blood" bay are just descriptive words people attach to their horse so it is somehow different than every other bay in the world.

But yes, she is just brown.

Like everyone else said - the "shades" are just descriptive and have nothing to do with registration. Also the "shade" can change with season, diet, etc.

Drafty say´s "Dark Bay" and I think that is as close as you can get.
