I was flipping through a supplier catalogue yesterday and took a close look at some of the bits they offer.
I can honestly say this is the worst bit I think I've ever seen...

A "Screw head bit"

... Huh?

Yep. The mouthpiece is the same as that of a screwdriver; sharp edges and all.

I saw that one when i was looking for a western snaffle. I can't imagine using that. I also so one that looked like a bicycle chain.

I would be afraid to put a screw bit in their mouth. Won't it cut their lips? What is the purpose of it?

Wow, and that chain mouth one is also a gag bit. As if the chain itself wasn't enough. :,,(

Disgusting.

FP, I think the only purpose of that is to dominate a horse through pain. I can't imagine that anyone could really accomplish anything by using that bit except to have a very hard mouthed horse after a while from all the scar tissue.

so, the same method as using fear to dominate a horse?

Believe it or not, peope do - why? Beacuse they are taught that the bit fixes the horse..not educated, persistant, consistant riding.

And the question really is.....if the horse reflect the rider 100% of the time....theen, isn't it really the rider who needs to be corrected????

I say yes.

I also see bits like that used on Mules. Who knows why? I've grown up breaking and training mules, and they are just as horses, if you ride them correctly, they give you the correct answers.

Peope make me shake my head in confusion.

I've seen that too. Mules are smarter than horses, therefore tougher to break They actually need to trust you, and if they want you off, you're coming off.

People who break mules around here actually break them. One or two have gotten killed.

To everyone who cannot click the link - can a mod please put this in the original post please?
The worst thing is some stores INDEED sell it. And I certainly can see some idiots buying "fix it all" bit.

yeah, they invent those things because people think that when they have training issues with a horse that they need the biggest, baddest bit out there to punish the horse with and to do the job for them.

I know a guy like that. The guy bought his horse dead broke and knows nothing about training horses, but won't listen to anyone, either. I gave him my french link snaffle and the horse was doing really well in it. Then the guys buys a cheap saddle that isn't remotely close to fitting correctly. The horse starts intermittantly falling down and rearing. Even though everyone told him it was his saddle bearing down on the withers and spinal column, he didn't listen. He just went out and bought himself a Tom Thumb (that he plow reins in, to boot). I told him that's a nasty harsh bit, and his response was, "GOOD! It was the toughest bit I could find. It's what this horse needs!" So, yeah...the manufacturers and retailers do cater to the idiot sadists out there.
