Help! My pony Bart(19yo) is acting weird. This morning when I went up to feed him he wasnt interested in his food, he would take a small bite, chew a little, then spit it out! Whats wrong?? I listened to his stomach for like 30 seconds and didnt hear anything and then I made him walk and he walked just fine(he is prone to lameness) he wasnt trying to lay down just looked like he was trying to chew with his tounge sticking out. Whats wrong? What should I do? Is it his teeth? Do I need my vet?
Thank you,
Megan

Well, my horse Dozer is eating it fine, so is the donkey Radar, I opened this a day or two ago and he ate it then. I think it is a mouth problem, not colic, because my mom said she thinks he is trying to eat just is spitting it out because it is causing him pain :( We are getting numbers for equine dentists right now.

I know its not colic, he is pooping, my dad says he hears gut sounds now, and if he was he would be laying down and acting lame(those are all the symptoms he had last time he colicked so I am positive it isnt colic.

Look, if I had the money the vet would have been out here at 7 in the morning when I first noticed. But, I am only 14 and just spent my money on buying some pets I have no money and have no way to get the vet out unless my parents feel its necessary. I called him he said that Bart doesn't have colic probably just a sore mouth because one of my sister's friend rode him yesterday and was hard on his mouth >( If he is still sore tomorrow, we will call both the vet and the dentist.

I wasn't trying to have attitude, just mad at my parents for jumping on this and when I said I dont have money I was talking about me NOT my parents, My parents are the horse owners they can easily afford vet bills, feed bills, farrier fees, but they would rather wait things out when I would rather jump on things. I know I posted that I wanted help and I do, its just with all of you saying colic gets on my nerves because I know for sure it is not colic. This pony has colicked before(only once in my care and it was when he was new and we were learning) He ALWAYS does the same thing, laying down, no gut sounds, no poop, and only colics if he is having really bad foot pains. We have been keeping him at a steady weight that our vet says is perfect for him. Sorry if I acted rude but please stop saying colic. It isnt.
Thanks,
Megan

We called the vet, I said in one of my posts that I think it is a tooth problem, My parents were against calling because they had asked my aunt who they think knows everything and she said since someone with no horse experience was riding she probably hurt his mouth. I was begging them but they dont listen to me, they dont care what random people over the internet say, they ask who they want to ask and assume they are right. I have no control over my parents. I am not going to 'just do him a favor and sell him' becuase this horse had so many homes before I got him and we will do anything for eachother and he knows he has a forever home here. If I had known I would have needed my money for him I wouldnt have bought my pets I would have let them go on by and not even cared but that didnt happen, the dentist and vet are coming out thrusday(wish it was sooner but my dad has other plans >( ) Can you guys please stop telling me I am rude or a bad owner, If I was an adult or was the true owner or heck if I had any control over my parents I would have had the vet and dentist there that morning. So I am pretty sure it isnt choke, my mom was doing some internet research and said something about quidding? Who knows what she is talking about, most people just ignore her. Anyways, when I posted this I was hoping for you guys to post possible teeth problems (i.e. choke, needs floating, etc.)So sorry for being confusing I guess is what that would be referred to as?

Bart seems to be doing better, he was eating completely fine last night, finished all his food and this morning he wasn't hesitating either. If he goes back down hill I will call the vet. Promise. He still has his tooth app. on Thursday but I think I might call a different one and try and get him out today because the thought of bart being all drugged up if it wasn't a tooth problem instead some freak colic that came from nowhere I would be worried. So, gonna make hopefully just one call today and then go from there.

Thanks gizpeptig! Yea, according to my mom it has been years since his teeth have been floated because every year our vet looks in his mouth and says he looks perfect! So, I guess he naturally kept his teeth good, maybe his age is finally catching up with him so now he needs that. I dont think it is choke because there has been no signs of coughing, drooling, or runny nose but I originally thought it could have been a less servere choke. I hope it was the tugging on his mouth but I will know for sure on thursday.

I wasnt saying that you guys were random people on the internet who cant be believed because if I thought that I wouldn't be asking. I know this is a very confusing thread because I was very confused writing it. When I wrote the op I thought it was colic thats why I checked for stomach noises. I know you guys are all trying to help and I really am appreciating it but according to our vet, who has treated Bart for a long time, told me it isnt colic because he isnt lame and when he colics its because he goes lame and doesnt move enough therefore he isnt moving enough and it messes him up. Confusing but my parents are very close minded people and they only trust certain people, unfortunately, they trust the sucky people that arent always right. I say it is a tooth problem because when he was eating the first day it seemed as if he was chewing and his tounge kept getting in the way? Make sense or no cause I dont know how else to describe it. Anyways if the dentist cant find anything the vet will be called and will come out, I made my parents promise me that. I AM SORRY IF I HAVE CONFUSED YOU OR SEEMED UNGRATEFUL FOR YOUR HELP, I TRUELY DO APPRECIATE IT I AM JUST STRESSED RIGHT NOW. I really am hoping its just a sore mouth but who knows, this wouldn't be the first time he has confused people.

I really wish I had more control of this situation and I really am not trying for sympathy just advice, the reason I said that it wasn't colic and I know is because my mom made me she said if I was gonna tell strangers info might as well just tell them the vet said it isnt that. I agree with you guys, he hasn't seen him, he doesn't know but like I said before, they trust him and dont care what you guys have to say. Is there anything I can check for to know?
Thanks

Its not like they aren't gonna pay for him, they just dont like jumping the gun if it isnt urgent.

*UPDATE*
Dentist said he was eating weird because a few of his back teeth were deteriorating fast and he had to adjust to it. They filed down the teeth to make him more comfortable and they said it should help. The vet did nothing but sedate him, so I didn't ask her to examine him.
