I spoke to Rosie's previous owner this morning, and she said something that I've been thinking about all day. I had told her that I bought her really wanting to trail ride her this year. She said that at 4 months I could take the baby along on the trails or to shows or whatever. Does this sound right? She went on to say that at some of the shows she's seen people in the ring warming up with the baby running right beside of the momma.

I had been planning on taking Rosie down home (back country redneckville VA) for the 4th of July. We have a big family reunion, and I was going to stay about a week just to do some riding. IF she has it in March, that would mean at 4 months old, this baby would be in a trailer for about 6 hrs each way. Is that even safe??? I just don't want to go on the advice of someone like her. I mean she didn't even realize that one of her horses was bred until she got up one morning and found the baby in the field.

So what is your take on all of this? I want to ride, but I don't want to risk Rosie or the baby in any way.

I wouldn't trailer one that far and to a strange place with strange horses and people around myself because of safety issues and I think it could be stressful for all involved but I would ask a vet for an opinion if it is something you really want to do.

IF I were to even think about it, there would only be my dad, sister and her two small kids (3 and 1). As far as strange horses...no, I would be riding my dad's 80 acres by myself. I do think it would be way to stressful for them though. Quite a few of the things she said just struck a bad chord with me.

Oh, the reunion is held away from my dad's place.

That would be fine. i showed a mare with a foal once. It was a pain in the butt, however the filly turned out great.

Thanks Kevinshorses. Now at least I know I can ride around here on a private farm with the baby in tow. But what about trailering them for the amount of time it would take for me to get down home? Wouldn't that stress both of them out too much? Rosie travels very very well. But I have a 2 horse straight load. Would it be to hard on the baby?
