Okay, so i've been riding for a while, 6 years. me and my horse are learning to jump and do dressage and all of a sudden! i'm always in chair seat! at the walk i'm fine, but speeding up i jot my leg forward and my trainer is always like CHAIR SEAT CHAIR SEAT. i've never had this problem before? i've been working on heels down for awhile and now i've got that down pat. Could i be just jamming my heel down instead of sinking the weight? i need help:)

Now that you are desperate, here is the cure:
1) hours spent riding without stirrups.
I suggest an hour at a time, to start, on a very safe horse and do figures at the WALK.
2) posting without stirrups
My instructor had us warm up 3x on each rein to prepare us for jumping. Nobody panicked when they lost a stirrup over a jump, as a result of this practice.
3) standing/riding in 2-point.
Start slowly and work up to w-t-c.
Spend as many hours at a time trail riding. Your chair seat will disappear when you are in the saddle for 4 hours straight bc your cannot maintain bracing against the stirrups.

Oh thank you smrobs! The time that i all of a sudden had problems was when i switched to a different saddle:) ill definately be switching back.

Either your stirrups are too short and your legs have nowhere to go.. or you're putting too much weight in your stirrups versus your seat and then your legs are swinging forward.

it's interesting that you're fine at the walk but move into a chair seat in other gaits...I bet you get tense and pinch with your knees which could put you in a chair seat....riding without stirrups can help and riding in a 2 point position at the trot and canter can help as well. I don't recommend posting the trot without stirrups as that will further encourage you to pinch with your knees.

Do you have the opportunity to take lunge lessons? That way you can solely focus on your seat while the instructor has control of the horse.

Chair seats are not only about legs forward, they are about thighs too high. THe best solution: time in two point to get all the joints of the legs elastic/stretching down and back with lowered heels. There are two things you have to identify: tension/ability to keep the stretch and knowing where your legs are. Yes, time on a lunge w/o stirrups/lengthening the leg (down/back/toes still up) can help. But just standing in two point and pushing leg forward until you sit down, and the pushing them back until you fall forward teaches you to know where the legs are. Time w/o stirrups can get proper placement (although the length should make no difference) because a lowered thigh/stretching from hip to heel slightly back should keep it remedied. Posting trot w/o stirrups will help because the rider can learn to release more, and it is not the pinching per se, but the lifting up (not inward) of the thigh/knee; that is why two point helps because it is about stretch.

If your saddle is too narrow or sitting on an uphill-built horse so that the pommel sits too high, you'll be forced into a chair-seat.

Try this exercise--change your diagonal by standing (not sitting) the extra beat. Do this every stride. Basically stand-stand-sit, stand-stand-sit, stand-stand-sit. Stand over the pommel in the trot for a few laps. Alternate between these exercises. Throw in some two point in between.

Then do the exercise without stirrups.
